ماas long as عِشتُI live لاnot زارَكُمvisits you إِلّاexcept ثَنايَmy praise وَإِنand even though
أَمسىhas become يُفاخِرُvies with سَمعيmy hearing فَيكُمُconcerning you بَصَريmy sight
As long as I live, only my praise shall visit you, though
my sight now vies with my hearing concerning you.
فَأُلزِمُso I bind النَفسَmyself نَشريmy proclamation نَشرَspreading ذِكرِكُمُyour renown
إِنّيindeed I حَضَرتُI have come وَأَطويand I conceal عَنكُمُfrom you خَبَريmy news
So I bind myself to proclaiming and spreading your renown;
indeed I have come, yet conceal my news from you.
لِأَنَّbecause إِفراطَexcess هَذاthis البِرِّkindness يُبعِدُنيkeeps me away
عَنكُمfrom you وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI have been مِنهُof it دائِمَconstant in الحَذَرِwariness
For this excess of kindness keeps me
away from you, and I have always been wary of it.
مَعَdespite أَنَّthat عُذرَكُمُyour excuse فيin ذاكَthat مُتَّضِحٌclear
لاno عُذرَexcuse لِلسُحبِfor the clouds إِنif لَمnot تَهمِpour down بِالمَطَرِwith rain
Yet your justification for that is clear:
clouds have no excuse if they do not pour down rain.
فَإِنso if عَتَبتُمyou reproach عَلىfor بُعدِremoteness المَزارِvisiting أَقُلI shall say
نِظامَverse مَنone who قالَsaid قَبليbefore me قَولَthe words of مُعتَذِرِone offering an excuse
If you reproach me for staying away, I shall recite
the verse of one who spoke before me in self-defense:
لَوِif اِختَصَرتُمyou curtailed مِنَfrom الإِحسانِgenerosity زُرتُكُمُI would have visited you
وَالعَذبُand sweet water يُهجَرُis shunned لِلإِفراطِbecause of excess فيin الحَضَرِpresence
“Had you curtailed your generosity, I would have visited you;
and even sweet water is shunned when too constantly at hand.”
