وَما كانَ ذا سُكري مِنَ الراحِ وَحدَها

وَما كانَ ذا سُكري مِنَ الراحِ وَحدَها

وَلَكِن لِأَسبابٍ يَقومُ بِها العُذرُ

وَلَكِن لِأَسبابٍ يَقومُ بِها العُذرُ

And this drunkenness of mine was not from wine alone,

but from causes on which my excuse rests.

جَمَعتَ لَنا راحاً وَرَوحاً وَراحَةً

جَمَعتَ لَنا راحاً وَرَوحاً وَراحَةً

وَكُلٌّ لَهُ في العَقلِ ما تَفعَلُ الخَمرُ

وَكُلٌّ لَهُ في العَقلِ ما تَفعَلُ الخَمرُ

You brought together for us wine, refreshment, and repose,

and each affects the mind as wine does.

وَأَبدَيتَ أَخلاقاً حَكى الراحَ فِعلُها

وَأَبدَيتَ أَخلاقاً حَكى الراحَ فِعلُها

وَليسَ عَجيباً أَن يُتَعِتعَني السُكرُ

وَليسَ عَجيباً أَن يُتَعِتعَني السُكرُ

And you displayed virtues whose effect was like that of wine,

and it is no wonder that drunkenness makes me stagger.
