وَأَهرَتٍ مِنَ الكِلابِ أَخطَلِ

وَأَهرَتٍ مِنَ الكِلابِ أَخطَلِ

أَصفَرَ مَصقولِ الإِهابِ أَشعَلِ

أَصفَرَ مَصقولِ الإِهابِ أَشعَلِ

And a wide-mouthed, droop-eared hound,

With sharp fangs amongst the dogs Achtel

Yellow, sleek of hide, marked with white,

Yellow, smooth coated Ihâb flaming

أَعصَمَ مِثلِ الفَرَسِ المُحَجَّلِ

أَعصَمَ مِثلِ الفَرَسِ المُحَجَّلِ

يُخالُ مَرحوضاً وَإِن لَم يُغسَلِ

يُخالُ مَرحوضاً وَإِن لَم يُغسَلِ

White on the forelegs, like a white-stockinged horse,

Sturdy like a saddled horse

Seeming washed, though he has not been washed,

Scenting even when unwashed

مُختَصَرِ الشِلوِ ثَقيلِ المَحمَلِ

مُختَصَرِ الشِلوِ ثَقيلِ المَحمَلِ

مُنفَسِحِ الهامَةِ ناتي المُقلِ

مُنفَسِحِ الهامَةِ ناتي المُقلِ

Compact of body, heavy in frame,

Short tailed, heavy loaded

Broad of head, with prominent eyes,

Broad chested, long necked

إِذ أَنَّهُ كَالسَوسَنِ المُهَدَّلِ

إِذ أَنَّهُ كَالسَوسَنِ المُهَدَّلِ

كَأَنَّ فَوقَ عُنقِهِ المُعتَدِلِ

كَأَنَّ فَوقَ عُنقِهِ المُعتَدِلِ

For he is like a drooping lily,

As he is like a dangling lily

As though above his well-proportioned neck

As if above his balanced neck is

هامَةَ فَهدٍ في صِماخي فُرعُلِ

هامَةَ فَهدٍ في صِماخي فُرعُلِ

مُنسَرِحِ الزَورِ فَسيحِ الكَلكَلِ

Sat a cheetah's head between a hyena cub's ears.

Long in the chest, broad in the breast,

With wide chest and prominent anklebones

مِنهَضِمِ الخَصرِ عَريضِ الكِفلِ

مِنهَضِمِ الخَصرِ عَريضِ الكِفلِ

ذي أَيطَلٍ خالٍ وَمَتنٍ مُمتَلي

ذي أَيطَلٍ خالٍ وَمَتنٍ مُمتَلي

Tucked at the waist, broad at the rump,

Compressed loin and broad shoulders

With a hollow flank and a well-filled back,

White marked, scarred and muscular back

خَصيبِ أَعلى العَضبِ مَحلِ الأَسفَلِ

خَصيبِ أَعلى العَضبِ مَحلِ الأَسفَلِ

قَصيرِ عَظمِ الساعِدِ المُفَتَّلِ

قَصيرِ عَظمِ الساعِدِ المُفَتَّلِ

Fleshy at the top of the forelimb, lean below,

Thick necked, higher foreleg than hind

Short-boned in his corded forearm,

Short upper-arm bone, separated muscles

مُقتَصَرِ الأَيدي طَويلِ الأَرجُلِ

مُقتَصَرِ الأَيدي طَويلِ الأَرجُلِ

مُزدَحِمِ الأَظفارِ ثَبتِ العَضلِ

مُزدَحِمِ الأَظفارِ ثَبتِ العَضلِ

Short of forelegs, long of hind legs,

Short forelimbs, long hindlimbs

With close-set claws and firm muscles,

Crowded claws, sturdy muscles

ذي ذَنَبٍ سَبطٍ قَصيرٍ أَفتَلِ

ذي ذَنَبٍ سَبطٍ قَصيرٍ أَفتَلِ

أَسلَسَ مِن دَفَّتِهِ كَالمِغزَلِ

أَسلَسَ مِن دَفَّتِهِ كَالمِغزَلِ

With a smooth, short, twisted tail,

A hanging, short and twisted tail

Hanging loosely from his flank like a spindle,

Smoother than its flowing lock as a spindle

كَثيرِ تَكرارِ نَزاعِ الأَحبُلِ

كَثيرِ تَكرارِ نَزاعِ الأَحبُلِ

يَبيتُ غَضبانَ إِذا لَم يُرسِلِ

يَبيتُ غَضبانَ إِذا لَم يُرسِلِ

Often tugging again and again at his leashes,

Often tugging against ropes

He spends the night angry if he is not set loose.

Angry at night if not let loose

قَيدِ الأَوادي وَعِقالِ الإِبِلِ

قَيدِ الأَوادي وَعِقالِ الإِبِلِ

رُعتُ بِهِ سِربَ الظِباءِ الجُفَّلِ

رُعتُ بِهِ سِربَ الظِباءِ الجُفَّلِ

A fetter for wild beasts, a hobble for camels,

To roam the valleys and hobble the camels

With him I startled a herd of skittish gazelles.

I chased a herd of nimble gazelles with him

فَاِعتَصَمَت مِنهُ بِأَعلى الجَبَلِ

فَاِعتَصَمَت مِنهُ بِأَعلى الجَبَلِ

فَظَلَّ يَنحو قَصدَها وَيَعتَلي

فَظَلَّ يَنحو قَصدَها وَيَعتَلي

So they sought refuge from him atop the mountain,

They sought refuge atop a hill

And he kept heading straight for them, climbing upward,

He persisted approaching and climbing after them

وَخَرَّيَنصَبُّ عَليها مِن كَلِ

وَخَرَّيَنصَبُّ عَليها مِن كَلِ

شَبيهَ سَهمٍ مَرَقَت مِن عَيطَلِ

شَبيهَ سَهمٍ مَرَقَت مِن عَيطَلِ

And plunged, rushing down upon them from [unclear wording],

And would lunge down onto them with aggression

Like an arrow sped from a long bow,

Like arrows released from a bowstring

يَفوتُ لَمحَ الطَرفِ في التَأَمُّلِ

يَفوتُ لَمحَ الطَرفِ في التَأَمُّلِ

حَتّى إِذا اِنقَضَّ اِنقِضاضَ الأَجدَلِ

حَتّى إِذا اِنقَضَّ اِنقِضاضَ الأَجدَلِ

Outstripping the eye's glance, even when watched closely,

Eluding the glance's perception

Until, when he swooped like a falcon,

Until when he pounced pouncing of a vigorous youth

فَما اِرتَضى مِنها بِدونِ الأَوَّلِ

فَما اِرتَضى مِنها بِدونِ الأَوَّلِ

غادَرَهُ مُجَدَّلاً في الجَندَلِ

غادَرَهُ مُجَدَّلاً في الجَندَلِ

He settled for none of them but the foremost.

He would not stop without the first

He left it felled upon the stones,

Abandoning it mauled in bushes

ذا جُثَّةٍ وافِرَةٍ كَالمِسحَلِ

ذا جُثَّةٍ وافِرَةٍ كَالمِسحَلِ

وَظَلَّ صَحبي في نَعيمٍ مُقبِلِ

وَظَلَّ صَحبي في نَعيمٍ مُقبِلِ

With a massive body, like a wild ass.

Of ample body like a raincloud

And my companions basked in the bliss coming their way:

While my companions enjoyed the fresh meat

لَهُم غَريضُ لَحمِهِ وَالشُكرُ لي

لَهُم غَريضُ لَحمِهِ وَالشُكرُ لي

Its fresh meat was theirs, and the thanks were mine.
