And a pool—its flower, a lotus—
And a pond of water lilies—its flower
bent its neck in the night’s darkness and hid away.
Bent its neck in the darkness and hid.
فَمُذthen, when لاحَappeared وَجهُface حَبيبيmy beloved لَهُto it
فَمُذ لاحَ وَجهُ حَبيبي لَهُ
وَشاهَدَand beheld أَنوارَهُhis radiance كَاللَهَبlike flame
وَشاهَدَ أَنوارَهُ كَاللَهَب
But when my beloved’s face appeared to it
Then, when my beloved’s face appeared to it,
and it beheld his radiance, like flame,
And it beheld his radiance like flame,
تَوَهُّمَهُit took it to be الشَمسَthe sun قَدalready أَشرَقَتhad risen

فَقامَ عَلى سوقِهِ وَاِنتَصَب
it mistook him for the sun already risen;
It took that face for the sun, already risen;
so it rose upon its stalk and stood erect.
So it rose upon its stalks and stood upright.
