An Eid al-Fitr at which the heart of Time nearly burst,

when innate natures heralded the heights of your glory.

O sovereign in whom the world has come to take pride,

and fasting, Eid al-Fitr, and the festivals boast!

Your presence in the world and your generosity to me have become

a new feast in which humankind rejoices.

For the feast is awaited once a year,

and your hand's bounty is a feast that needs no waiting.

If the feast spoke fairly, it would say to us:

“May you rejoice in gaining the righteous king!”

A king whose renown soared among kings; and nothing

built his renown but the keen, hard-tempered sword.

Gentle of disposition, with no harshness in his character

toward those who come to him, nor a haughty tilt of his cheek.

He knows no excuse for withholding aid from one who hopes,

ever; yet he gives and apologizes.

Of the proud family of Artuq, who stitched shut

the rent in glory after fortune's reversals had changed it.

They are the kings through whom Time is clothed

in glory, and earth's kings vanish when they appear.

They bestow favors, but before they are asked,

and grant pardon, but after gaining power.

O son of the kings to whom Time submitted

when they acted uprightly toward the Creator, as they were commanded:

    بِقيمَةِ الدُرِّ لا بِالسُلكِ يُعتَبَرُ

    I deserve no credit for stringing the pearls of your praise;

it is judged by the pearls' value, not by the thread.

    تَزهو الخَمائِلُ أَنّى يَهطِلُ المَطَرُ

    Its artistry bloomed only through your beneficence;

the groves flourish wherever the rain pours down.
