Discipline may benefit the young, given time;
Poetry may help the weak at due leisure -
but discipline is of no benefit in old age.
But poetry's useless 'gainst calamity's pressure.
إنَّindeed الغُصُونَthe branches إذاwhen قوَّمتهاyou straighten them اعتَدَلَتthey become straight

ولن تَلِينَ إذا قَوَّمتَها الخُشُبُ
Indeed, branches become straight when you straighten them;
Branches, when tender, by wisdom you're able to bend;
but wood will never become pliant when you straighten it.
Hardened to timber, they'll nevermore mend.
