طَرَقَت مَطلَعَ الثُرَيّا وَوَلَّت

وَالثُرَيّا تَشُمُّ ريحَ الوُقوعِ

وَالثُرَيّا تَشُمُّ ريحَ الوُقوعِ

She visited by night at the Pleiades' rising, and departed

The Pleiades rose and swayed,

while the Pleiades smelled the scent of their setting,

And the Pleiades scent the breeze of falling,

تَحتَ جُنحٍ مِنَ الدُجى أَورَثَتهُ

تَحتَ جُنحٍ مِنَ الدُجى أَورَثَتهُ

عَبَقاً في قَميصِهِ المَخلوعِ

عَبَقاً في قَميصِهِ المَخلوعِ

beneath a wing of darkness, to which she bequeathed

Under wings of darkness it left behind,

a fragrance in its cast-off shirt.

A fragrance on its discarded shirt.

أَيُّها اللَيلُ هَل دَرى البَدرُ أَنّي

بِتُّ مِن أُختِهِ مَكانَ الضَجيعِ

O night, did the full moon know that I

spent the night as his sister's bedfellow?

Pass the night with his sister in her bed?

أَمكَنَتني مِنَ العِناقِ فَلَمّا

جَلَبَ الفَجرُ ساعَةَ التَوديعِ

She let me embrace her; then, when

عَمَدَت بُردَها بِغُصنٍ وَقامَت

تَنفُضُ الطَلَّ أَحمَراً مِن دُموعِ

she propped her mantle with a bough and rose,

She shook off her chill with a branch, and stood

shaking off the dew, red with tears.
