ياO وَردَةًrose جادَتgave generously بِهاwith it يَدُhand مُتحِفيmy gift-giver
فَهَمىso streamed لَهاfor it دَمعيmy tears وَهاجَand was stirred تَأَسُّفيmy grief
O rose, generously bestowed by my gift-giver's hand,
O rose brought by the hand of a connoisseur
So my tears streamed for it, and my grief was stirred.
My tears flowed for it and my sorrow was provoked
حَمراءُred عاطِرَةُfragrant النَسيمِthe breeze كَأَنَّهاas though it were

Red, its breeze fragrant, as though it were
Fragrant red, as if it were
From the cheek of a pampered lad in the first bloom of youth.
From the cheek of a young man kissing his beloved
عَرَضَتappeared تُذَكِّرُنيreminds me دَماًblood مِنfrom صاحِبٍa friend

It appeared, reminding me of a friend's blood,
It reminded me of the blood of a companion
With which the world drank the choicest wine.
With which the world drank a sip of death
فَلَثَمتُهاso I kissed it شَغَفاًwith passion وَقُلتُand I said لِعَبرَتيto my tear
هِيَit ماwhat تَمُجُّdisgorges الأَرضُthe earth مِنfrom دَمِblood يُوسُفِYusuf
So I kissed it passionately and said to my tear:
I kissed it passionately and said to my tears
It is what the earth disgorges from Yusuf's blood.
This is not what the earth absorbs from Joseph's blood
