عَفاmay pardon اللَهُGod عَنّيme فَإِنّيfor indeed I اِمرُؤٌa man
أَتَيتُI came السَلامَةَsafety مِنthrough بابِهاits gate
May God pardon me, for I am a man
May God forgive me, for I am but a man
who has come to safety through its gate.
Who sought safety through its gate
عَلىdespite أَنَّthe fact that عِنديI have لِمَنfor whoever هاجَنيprovoked me
كَنائِنَquivers غَصَّتwere choked بِنُشّابِهاwith their arrows
Yet I have, for whoever has provoked me,
Though ready in my scabbard rest
quivers choked with their arrows.
Swords tempered keen to smite my foes
وَلَوand if كُنتُI were أَرميI shoot بِهاwith them مُسلِماًa Muslim
لَكانَwould surely be السُّهيلِيُّal-Suhayli أَولىmost deserving بِهاof them
And were I to shoot a Muslim with them,
And had I cast them at a guiltless man
al-Suhayli would be most deserving of them.
Myself were worthier of the blow
