وَأَقولُand I say إِنif أَناI لَمnot أَفُهI speak بِثَنائِكُمin praise of you
ضاعَتwould be lost لَكُمof yours عِنديwith me يَدٌa favor وَذِمامُand a bond of obligation
And I say: if I do not speak your praise,
If I do not comprehend your praise
your favor and its claim upon me would be lost.
You have lost to me a hand and a bridle
أَماas for أَناme وَيدُand the hand اِبنِson of مَنصورٍMansur مَعاًtogether
فَكَماthen, as يُقالُis said خَميلَةٌa leafy grove وَغَمامُand a cloud
As for me and Ibn Mansur's hand together,
As for me and the hand of Ibn Mansur together
we are, as they say, a leafy grove and a cloud.
It is as though it is said a dove and a cloud
نِعَمٌfavors لَهُof his خُضرٌgreen تَرَنَّمَsang melodiously فَوقَهاabove them

His favors are verdant; above them sang
Good fortune for him, green, over which cooed
my gratitude, as doves perched upon the branches.
My gratitude as pigeons alight on branches
حَسبيenough for me مِنَof الجَدوىbounty وِدادُكَyour affection وَحدَهُit alone
فَهُوَfor it is الغِنىwealth لاnot ماwhat يَرىdeem أَقوامُsome people
Your affection alone is all the bounty I need;
It suffices me of usefulness your love alone
for it is wealth, not what some people regard as wealth.
For it is the riches not what people see
