An apple was given to him,

Red in the hue of his cheeks.

He meant to kiss it, so it visited

His mouth, to the chagrin of his eyes.

By God, O blossoms of his eye sockets,

Let me ask the myrtle of his cheeks:

Why did it visit the daisies of his mouth early,

Knocking at his door of wishes?

    نَكهَتَها طيبَ مَرشفَيهِ

    Perhaps he had once lent

    His lips’ perfume to its scent;

So it visited him early, shyly,

    Returning his breaths to him.
