شَيَّبhas grayed أَصْداغِيmy temples الهُمومthe cares الهِمَمُthe weighty ones
لَيْلَةٌa night لَيْلَاpitch-dark وَيَوْمٌand a day أَيْوَمُlong and hard
Weighty cares have turned my temples gray.
My temples grayed from worries and aspirations
A pitch-dark night and a long, hard day.
A night becomes a night and day becomes endless
قَدْindeed رابَنِيhas unsettled me النِسْيانُforgetfulness والتَوَهُّمُand uncertain imagining
فَكِدْتُso I almost مِنْfrom طُولthe long duration اللَيالِيthe nights أَهْرَمُgrow decrepit
Indeed, forgetfulness and uncertain imaginings have unsettled me.
Forgetfulness and delusion have troubled me
So I have almost grown decrepit from the long passage of nights.
I almost perished from the long nights
وَماyet not ارْمَأَزَّflinched الأُسْحُمانُthe dark one الأَسْحَمُjet-black
تَهْوِيfall الدَواهِيthe calamities حَوْلَهُaround him وَيَسْلَمُand he escapes unharmed
Yet the dark, jet-black one has not flinched.
Yet the blackest (nights) did not last
Calamities fall around him, and he escapes unharmed.
Consolations surround it and it passses
فَالآنَso now تُبْلَىare put to the test بِيagainst me الجِيادُthe fine steeds السُهَّمُthe lean ones
وَلاand not تُجارِينيthey keep pace with me إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle سَوَّمواthey set them galloping
So now the lean, fine steeds are put to the test against me.
Now my steeds fail me when most ardent
And they cannot keep pace with me when set galloping.
They cannot keep pace should we race
وَشَخَصَتand stared fixedly أَبْصارُهُمْtheir eyes وَأَجْذَمُواand they hastened on

And their eyes stared fixedly, and they hastened on.
Their eyes bulge and they become blind
Do not insult people, so that you will not be insulted.
Do not insult people as you would not be insulted
