    O scout, ever searching,

send to al-Dhiʾbi, who does not despair,

your praise; he will lift the worst misery from you.

Like rain in a dark-winged cloud, clothing

its rain-stars in good fortune, not ill luck,

a thunderous star's downpour surges for it.

Indeed, Ibn Qays, at every impasse,

obeyed a soul when other souls grew miserly,

ever commanding generosity, not dry withholding,

readily yielding to lavish, precious giving

and drawing from the overflow of deep seas.

    He shielded the honor of a man who was never vile;

and whoever follows his course is not defiled.

Approachable when scowling faces grow dark,

bright-browed, fierce in onset, tall in stature,

    a prowler like a prey-tearing lion.

With his sword's edge he strikes the helmet's razor crest,

with crashing blows, and strikes sparks with deep spear-thrusts.

You see the scorching ordeals of tooth-gnashing wars

    lay bare his noble nose.

And know that I am hopeful; I have not despaired.

I send my praise from a far-off place.

When the courier is delayed, it does not halt for rest,

as rising verses, ranging along every path.

Their reaches endure beyond long ages.

I used to speed on a huge, tawny-white camel

across deserts like expanses of smooth hide,

while the guide steered by dim stars,

when the necks of drowsy sleepers drooped,

and the jolting of head-bobbing Mahri camels surged,

long-reaching in foreleg, hard of head,

and on every stout-cheeked, silent, sturdy she-camel.

Even when the dusky sand of piled dunes crept,

I crossed on her, cleaving the pitch-black darkness.

Take this from my earnest labor, wrought with care:

verses rising above faulty rhyme and five-part verse,

twisted tight like a smooth, tightly wound cord.

The one who sips from them is unknown or known,

    without injustice or arrogant boasting.

People in Bayt al-Maqdis place their hopes in you,

and whoever sees your face does not hang his head.

If the devil of a whisper-haunted man scurries,

you show the gentleness of one friendly and companionable.

Yet at times you have the restiveness of unbroken steeds,

    when grappling with stubborn evil.

He kills with naphtha the flies on mangy camels.

O leader of the army and ornament of the council,

give me richly: gifts from givers have grown scarce.
