رَأَيْتI saw أَرْوَىArwa وَهْيَwhile she تَخْشَىfears فَقْدِيlosing me
تَعْجَبُmarvels وَالبَرْقand the lightning أَذَانthe herald الرَعْدِof thunder
I saw Arwa, afraid of losing me,
marveling—lightning is thunder’s herald—
بِمَطَرٍat rain لَيْسَis not بِثَلْجٍsnow صَرْدِbitterly cold
وَقُلْتُand I said عَمْداًdeliberately قاصِداًaiming لِعَمْدِيat my purpose
at rain that is no bitter-cold snow.
And I spoke deliberately, intent upon my aim,
وَالبَرْقwhile the lightning أَدْنَاهُits nearest flash بِأَرْضin the land السُغْدِof Sogd
ياO نَصْرNasr أَدْرِكْنِيcome to my aid بِغَيْثٍwith rain يُجْدِيthat brings benefit
while the nearest lightning was in the land of Sogd:
O Nasr, come to my aid with rain that brings relief,
يَرْحَضُwashes away آثارَthe traces السِنِينِof the years الجُرْدِbarren
إِنْif بَلَّit waters أَرْضِيmy land لَمْnot يُصِبْنِيreach me وَحْدِيme alone
that washes away the traces of barren years.
If it waters my land, it will not fall on me alone.
قَدْindeed كُنْتُI have been فِيin الوَعْدِthe promise وَعِنْدَand at العَهْدِthe pledge
وَالخَيْرُand bounty يَأْتِيcomes مِنْكَfrom you قَبْلَbefore الكَدِّtoil
I have held to the promise and the pledge,
and bounty comes from you before any toil,
سَهْلاًeasily إِذَاwhen أَكْدَىwithholds البَخِيلthe miser المُكْدِيthe tightfisted one
وَماand not عَلِمْنَاwe have known أَحَداًanyone مِنamong أَحْدِanyone
freely, when the tightfisted miser withholds.
We have never known anyone at all

to bestow the kindness that you bestow.
Accept my greeting: this is my intent.
إِذَاwhen الرُوَاةُthe reciters بَلَّغُواconvey ماwhat أُهْدِيI offer as a gift
فَلاso do not يَغُرَّنَّكَlet it deceive you مِنِّيabout me بُعْدِيmy distance
When the reciters convey what I offer,
do not let my distance deceive you about me.

And I, in my choosing and my earnest effort,
when I sift out verses of the finest form—

مَجَّدْتُI glorified نَصْراًNasr وَهوand he أَهْلworthy of المَجْدِglory
the grammarian seeks my meaning in them—
have glorified Nasr, who is worthy of glory.
قَدْindeed عَلِمَknows القائِلُthe speaker وَالمُؤدِّيand the reciter

بِأَنَّthat نَصْراًNasr لَيْسَthere is not فِيamong مَعَدِّMa‘add
The poet and the reciter know full well
that, as for Nasr, none among Ma‘add

the refuge of all Tamim and Sa‘d.
Indeed, I and my Sa‘d, as numerous as the most numerous,

Magog and the jinn with every army,
we would assail their multitudes with dreadful might.

We strike with a boulder that shatters foes;
those it strikes scatter from its pounding stone,

when we pelt the mountain-mass of the mightiest
with a projectile still sound on the rebound.

And my praise-poems from Najd never cease
to reach you; so remember to reward and support me.

You have bounty that is sought, and I have
something more enduring and sharper than the swords of India.

swift-moving, departing after coming to water?
