قُلْتُI said إِذاwhen مُسْتَمِعٌa listener أَرَمَّاfell silent
لَأَهْدِيَنَّI shall surely offer مِدْحَةًa eulogy تَنَمَّاgrows
I said, when a listener fell silent:
I shall surely offer praise that grows,
إِلَىto ابْنِa son عَمٍّof a paternal uncle لَمْnot يَزَلْcease to be مِعَمَّاgenerous to all
إِلَىto فَتىًa young man يطْرَدُdrives away عَنْهُfrom him الذَمّاblame
To a cousin who has always been generous to all,
To a young man from whom blame is driven away
مَجْدٌglory وَذَرْعٌand strength لَمْnot يَزَلْcease to be لِهَمَّاample
ياO نَصْرُNasr إِنَّindeed اللَّهَGod قَدْalready أَتَمّاhas perfected
By glory and ever-ample strength.
O Nasr, God has indeed perfected
نِعْمَتَهُHis blessing فِيin كُنْهِthe full extent مَنwhoever أَلَمّاhas come
ياO نَصْرُNasr إِنِّيindeed I لَمْnot أَزَلْI cease to be مُحْتَمَّاanxious
His blessing in full for whoever comes.
O Nasr, I have always been anxious:
أَخْشَىI fear وَيَكْفِيand wards off اللَّهُGod ماwhatever أَهَمّاcaused concern
عَلَيْكَfor you رَيْباًmisfortune وَخُطُوباًand calamities جَمّاnumerous
I fear—and God wards off whatever causes worry—
Misfortune for you and many calamities.
لاdo not تَرْجُyou look to خالاًa maternal uncle جافِياًharsh أَوْor عَمَّاa paternal uncle
وَاعْلَمْand know إِذَاwhen ماemphatic particle الأَمْرُthe matter ضَمَّpresses in ضَمّاtightly
Do not look to a harsh maternal uncle or a paternal uncle.
And know, when trouble presses hard,
إِنَّindeed لأَقْوامٍfor certain peoples أَباًa father وَأُمَّاand a mother
ياO نَصْرُNasr إِنَّindeed الحَيَّةthe serpent الأَصَمّاdeaf
That certain peoples have a father and a mother.
O Nasr, indeed the deaf serpent
يَحْرِقُgnashes ناباًa fang وَيَمُجُّand spits out سُمّاvenom
يَقْتُلُit kills قَتْلاًa killing أَنْupon يَشَمَّsniffing شَمّاa sniff
Gnashes a fang and spits out venom;
It kills outright at a mere sniff.
فَارْكَبْso mount بِجَدٍّwith resolve دَارِعاًwearing armor مُعْتَمّاwearing a turban
وَلاand do not تَمُوتَنَّyou die (emphatic) بِأَرْضٍin a land غَمّاobscure
So ride with resolve, armored and turbaned,
And never die in an obscure land.
فَالسَيْلُfor the flood بِالوادِيin the valley إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle طَمّاoverflows
أَبْدَىlaid bare عُرُوقَroots شَجَرٍof trees وَاقْتَمَّاand swept away
For when the flood in the valley overflows,
It lays bare the roots of trees and sweeps them away.
قَدْindeed كُنْتَyou were تَهْدِيguiding المُهْتَدِينَthe rightly guided أَمّاstraight ahead
You have indeed guided the rightly guided straight ahead.
