وصَلْتُI reached مِنfrom حَنْظَلَةَHanzala الأُسْطُمَّاthe noble core
وَالعَدَدَand the multitude الغُطامِطَvast and teeming الغِطَمّاimmense
I reached the noble heart of Hanzala,
I have come from Hanthalah's thickets,
And the teeming, immense multitude.
And the many-hilled places abounding in rocks and stones,
ثُمَّتَthen جِئْتُI came حَيَّةa serpent أَصَمّاdeaf
ضَخْماًhuge يُحِبُّhe loves الخُلُقcharacter الأَضْخَمَّاthe grandest
Then I came as a deaf serpent,
Then you came, a deaf adder,
Huge, loving the grandest character.
Huge, loving the hugest forms,
وَهْيَand she تُرِيكَshe shows you مِعْضَداًan upper arm وَمِعْصَماand a wrist
عَبْلاًplump وَأَطْرافَand the tips بَنانٍof fingers مُعْنَماred like ʿanam shoots
While she shows you an upper arm and a wrist,
She shows you an arm and wrist,
Plump, and fingertips red as ʿanam shoots.
Stout, with spreading fingers,
تَيْماءُa vast waterless desert لاnot يَنْجُوescapes بِهاin it مَنْwhoever دَوَّماcircled about
إِذَاwhen عَلاهاmounted it ذُوone possessed of انْقِباضٍswiftness أَجْذَماsped onward
A waterless waste, where none who circles about escapes;
Deadly Teyma that spares none who dares approach her,
When a swift traveler takes to it, he hastens onward.
When she is approached by one of coiled form, dwarfish,
مَنْwhoever خَرَّfell فيin قَمْقامِناour vast sea تَقَمْقَماwas engulfed
كَأَنَّهas though he فيin هُوَّةٍan abyss تَذَحلَماtumbled down
Whoever falls into our vast sea is engulfed,
Whoever descends into our deep hollows,
As though he had tumbled into an abyss,
Is as though he descends into clefts that subside with him,
كَماjust as هَوىfell فِرعَونُPharaoh إِذwhen تَغَمغَماgurgled
تَحْتَbeneath ظِلالِthe shadows المَوْجِthe waves إِذْwhen تَدَأَّماsurged
As Pharaoh sank, gurgling,
As Pharaoh plunged down when he drowned,
Beneath the shadows of the waves as they surged.
Beneath the waves billowing as he sank.
وَلَمْand not يَزَلْceased عِزُّmight تَمِيمٍTamim مُدْعَماbuttressed
لِلنّاسِto the people يَدْعُوcalls forth هَيْقَماًa towering man فَهَيْقَماthen another towering man
And Tamim's might has ever stood buttressed,
Yet the glory of Temim remains steadfast,
Calling to men, one towering man after another.
Calling the people, who answer the call;
كَالبَحْرِlike the sea ماwhatever لَقَّمْتَهُyou fed it تَلَقَّماit swallowed
وَمَنand whoever أَرَيْنَاهwe showed him الطَرِيقthe way اسْتَلْحَماkept to it
Like the sea, it swallows whatever you feed it.
As the sea whatever you throw to it swallows,
And whoever we showed the way kept to it,
And whoever we guide finds the road easy,
وَمَنْand whoever هَمَزْناwe jabbed رَأْسَهُhis head تَهَشَّماshattered
فَأَرْغَمَso may He abase اللَّهُGod الأُنُوفَthe noses الرُغَّماthe humbled ones
And whoever we jabbed on the head was shattered.
And whoever's head we tap is shattered;
So may God rub the humbled noses in dust,
So God broke the proud noses,
مَجْدُوعَهاthe severed ones among them وَالعَنِتَand the broken one المُخَشَّماthe crushed one
يَهْوُونَthey fall عَنْfrom أَرْكانِthe pillars عِزٍّmight يُشْتَماis reviled
The severed among them, and the broken, crushed ones.
And humbled the rancorous and inveterate.
They tumble from the pillars of a might that is reviled,
They recoil from the pillars of glory they defame,
لاnot ظالِمَone who wrongs الناسِthe people وَلاnor مُظَلَّماwronged
وَلَمand not أَزَلْI ceased عَنْin defense of عِرْضِthe honor قَوْمِيmy people مِرْجَماa stone-hurler
Neither wronging people nor suffering wrong.
Wronging no people, and wronged by none,
And I have ever been a stone-hurler defending my people's honor,
Nor have I ever swerved from guarding my people,
بِهَدْرِwith the roar of هَدّارٍa loud bellower يَمُجُّspews out البَلْغَماphlegm
لاnot خَرِعَweak العَظْمِof bone وَلاnor مُوَصَّماdebilitated
With the roar of a bellower spewing phlegm,
With a torrent of words the overwhelming flood;
Neither weak of bone nor debilitated.
Not one whose bones are cracked, or who is pierce-marked,
نَحْمَدُwe praise مَوْلاناour Lord الأَجَلَّthe most exalted الأَفْخَماthe most majestic
We praise our Lord, the most exalted, the most majestic.
We praise our Lord the Most High, the All-Glorious.
