Do you reproach me, when passion itself brings reproach?
Do you blame me, though passion is blameworthy,
A relentless reproacher burst into lengthy blame;
A fault-finder stirred up with blame, hot as live coal in the darkness?

She spends the night awakening me, like a blaze in the branches.

She will never be done criticizing me, will never let up her clamor.

She fears for me; the tender-hearted kindle the fire,
You fear for me, yet the passionate lover is bold.
while death is an adversary bent on forcible seizure.
And death is a raging bull, given to assault.

By her fire, which cannot be hidden,
and do not seek me with spells and clamor!
She is not deterred by charms and spells.

Before you, she exhausted the sleepless; leave off blaming me!
Do not blame me; feel shame before a squat fellow,
Do not deny me justice; be shy of ignorance!

That is so, though the blamer blamed me
and the luxuriant, drooping locks had become
And the old man clucked his tongue at the stubble-chinned youth.

I spoke to console her, though my grief remained my grief:
I do not keep late hours, and Bilal is not my comrade.

I make plain to the prince my manners;

He changed my condition and prolonged my delight—

I have curled up as a serpent curls,
And my honor is not on the road to disgrace.

How strange his affair and mine!

Advice that met with the minds’ approbation—
I have discarded the words of lying men;

Where the circumambulator calls out at Mecca,
by Najiya, who hurls harsh words.
I met with wonders that roused my wonder.

My honor is no road for abuse.
I met with a shining that was like the dog’s drowsiness,
And the slave Hayyan, son of the woman with the genital sheath—
And promises that my friends and I doubted,

Like bees doubting the fresh sweet water.
And I—my heart lays me open to the emir,
Until I feared that my Lord would take me to task for some wrongdoing.

sincere counsel reaching the innermost core of understanding.

That you will water me from Sib al-Furat’s channel
I swear by the Lord of east and west,
When a debt bit me—harsh, painful.

That taking a debt to repay a debt would fatten me up
I have met delay like a dog's dozing,
And worry my shoulder—evil vermin!

Stripping their enemies after spearing them—

Stripping them of the wood’s bark, the wood’s peel—
was calling me to account for a sinful deed.
Until we were left like prey for the wolf.

To make ready for the land of my people or the mountain paths.

وَاعْلَمْand know بِأَنِّيthat I دائِبٌpersevering لِدأْبِيin my customary pursuit
that drags, or fells before dragging.
A smooth-sided one, nimble, light,
Know that I persevere in my customary pursuit,
Dusky, with a thick trunk, a thickset foreleg,
وَالوَجْهِand the course مِنfrom أَبَابَةthe longing المُؤْتَبِّof one ready to travel
حَانَhas come انْطِلاقِيthe time of my departure وَأَجَدَّand pressed on صَحْبِيmy companions
and my course springs from a ready traveler's longing.
Shooting an arrow with holes for the bowstring,
My departure is due, and my companions press on
With a short quiver, round containers,
لأَرْضِtoward the land of قَوْمِيmy people أَوْor جِبالthe mountains of الدَرْبِthe pass
فأَنَاso I رامٍaiming for عَرْضَthe breadth of كُلِّevery سَهْبِopen plain
to my people's land, or the mountains of the pass.
The croups of the camels, the vile hyenas,
I aim to cross the breadth of every open plain,
The firm, in the despicable burrows.

if the Lord of power, the Captor, wills,
And perhaps in the night I will shake my mantle
either on the necks of tawny Mahri camels—
With the two-handed spears, piercing bosoms,
وَالعِيسُand the pale camels قَدْsometimes يَنْأَيْنَgo far away بَعْدَafter القُرْبِnearness

the pale camels sometimes going far after coming near—
Coursing like unleashed hounds,
or coming into sight, flank by flank:
Spearing like straightened spears.

each long-bodied camel, swift in her stride,
Until the wealth returns after loss,
a strong she-camel like a lean wild ass.
Whether profit from selling or gain from my hands,

From a generous king, more fertile than rain,
by its racing through the hollows of every hard tract,
Welcoming the guest with spaciousness,

Broad in manner, gentle with his horses,

Giving generously, not closefisted,

powerful, like the ridged rope-coil of al-Andaran,
Like the Man of Mishrif, shedding rain in heavy drops.
smooth-coated, lively, light in tail-hair,
And perhaps in times of hardship,

rounded in body, massive in frame,
When safety is feared and ruin dreaded,
bounding past the hard stones of the waymarks,
You make my sandal stand firm and raise up my heel.

with tightly wrought, smith-like hooves, striking with their cups,
Repair my wing that my strength may be straightened!
hard at the hoof-rims, dense within the hoof-hollow.
No feathers of mine have you ruffled.

Often at night I have set my broad-chested mount in motion
Seal my desires with triumph and gain!
with great-chested, white-girthed she-camels,
I thank you for your bounty and wet my throat,

worn smooth like shafts scraped from branches,
Immersed and sinking into the trough,
darting like a plunging falcon,
Drinking deep of the fresh, gurgling water.
