Do the weathered traces of camps make you weep,

as though they were sheets written over?

When my mount and my she-camel were tethered,

I undertook, when the farmer reaped,

a knotty challenge no weakling could wrest

from me, even if Iblis had strengthened him.

And a need whose burden I pursued unflaggingly,

as though it were a lingering trace of illness

in the body, or tawny, aged wine,

for which the stubborn brute burned with thirst,

when the gluttonous companion grew frivolous,

was handled by a fierce champion of mine:

a head-breaker, a slayer of the enemies' serpents,

    neither basely eager nor despairing,

a wrenching, crushing force against hard tasks.

When she saw me, after I once strutted

in fine wraps, rough cloth now sufficing for my dress,

and the bloom of youth's complexion had faded,

and the bride had forgotten her youthful vigor,

and black and dusky-brown hair had receded

from my locks, and the once-caressed tresses

from a head like a knob of bone—

the wild cows sheltering in cover once saw me,

and the guileless oryx had known no trial,

in days when youth's devil was cunning,

and love became a protective charm about his neck.

May youth's season never depart, richly endowed

with its pleasures and its furtive games.

Nay, a land where pale camels spend the evening,

as though they were a deep-plunging boat

in water, were it not for the sweat's dark staining.

Its frenzied mirage streams through its wilderness,

with no covering upon its breast,

with its links, remote from the reaches joined to it—

a wilderness and a compacted knot of dunes,

or a looming, banded height with its markings effaced.

A strong-framed, sturdy camel crossed it with my saddle,

    one of the long-necked, four-toothed or six-toothed,

surging with both shoulders, tossing its head,

drowsy when it has finished its steady course,

when the halt for sleep has come after night travel,

and screech-owls and owls are abroad around it before dawn.

I did not know what the buried echo said.

As though she were a ring-legged beast, goaded on,

    well-turned, stout upon four legs,

on Rahba's hard ground, watering before dawn,

protected, where the fleshy pad is tightly packed,

by broad-rimmed hoofs, hammering and stone-hard.

    Scorching thirst has withered them,

away from a nearby watering-place with its hunter's hide,

and where a crouching, seated man is feared,

at night, fixed within his hunting blind,

scorched by misery and ever watchful,

    famished, hollow-bellied, licking hungrily,

with nothing whatsoever in the tribe.

Hunger and destitution have worn him down,

and food's compelling claim, and ravenous craving.

Then a scarred, skittish beast came forward,

    with white leg-markings like axes,

and a frightened, swift-running female bolted.

    وَانْصَاعَ مِنْ وَجسٍ لَهُ تَوْجِيسُ

    The archer missed, and the thicket rustled;

it wheeled at a faint sound it listened for in alarm,

creeping forward with its head's two jaws, battering,

doubling back upon her rump, moving behind,

yellow-toothed, biting hard if they disobeyed it.

Nay, the learned man and the priest know

that a man who fights us is possessed.

Wretched is the companion, the embittered infiltrator!

    What ails people who murmur?

Dejection made itself plain in their heads,

    يَثْوِي عَلَيْهِ يَصْطَلِي المَجُوسُ

    and a thought about their affair is brooded over;

the Magians dwell upon it and warm themselves.

Bridles and snorting mounts swept over it.

Through us one treats the jutting, crooked jaw,

and unruliness, until the hard-biting one yields.

Indeed, for us, whenever the ravager ravages,

the pampered, hulking brute grants our wishes,

    until abasement softens his resolve,

and groundwork stoked the fire of strife—

its fuel, and the flame kindled from it.

This is the time when souls have settled.

Ruinous strife has laid down its staff,

and calamities whose menace is grave,

and its befouled affair has dispersed away from it.

And someone other than us bears its stain:

    misguidance in religion and defilement.

The leader comes from us, and the chieftains are ours,

and the armies' tumult, and the host.

Our Qays is the best of those who measure

glory; among us stand towering, defiant heights.

Through them we contend, and through them we lead.

Each day beneath them lies a slain victim,

hacked apart, or a body struck down.

    And behind Khindif stands the massive rock;

flat-nosed beasts slip aside from its butting blow.

And nearing her and coming to her water is a deep plunge—

blows and baleful thrusts with spears,

    an interceptor, or a battle-kindler thrusting fiercely;

buck-goats swerve away from her wrath.
