And a wilderness that swallows the traveler's steps,

Treacherous in its vast reach, broad in expanse,

Where stranded camels lie, footsore and fallen,

    Wide-open at its heart, fearsome to descend into;

Over it, amid the surrounding summer heat, spreads

A mesh of mirage, like interlocking combs.

When the pinnacles of the high, towering mountain

Are turbaned with mirage as a grizzled man is turbaned,

Scarcely, in the long night of the waterward march,

Did the pale camels, stretched by the broad plains they bestride,

Bent as bows of shawḥaṭ wood are bent,

    Their forefeet pounding hard ground,

Jolting the saddles with their creaking girths,

Reach the stone slabs of a stone-floored hollow.

Upon it, from the sweeping winds' drifting dust,

Lies foul water, like raw flesh that has not been singed.

I reached it early, before the clamorous ghaṭāṭ sandgrouse,

And before the dark, striped sandgrouse,

    And before morning's foremost harbingers,

And before the far-ranging wolves came to drink,

On a slender mount with long, swift-striding legs,

Stretching the night-journey with a very long neck,

    يَنْضُو المَطايَا عَنَقُ المُسَمَّطِ

    With a bounding gait, broad-backed beneath its rider;

The girt mount's swift pace wears other mounts out,

With a long-reaching leg and a vigorous stride,

Urging on a swift leg whose return swing is unchecked.

So, you who speak the words of an overreacher—

While I stand in might that has never been trodden down,

Proud against the aggression of foes and the unjust,

With every wrathful one in haughty defiance,

Puffed at the jaws, refusing affront,

His two fangs clashing in haughty rage—

And I spoke the words of a man who had not gone too far:

    Turn away from people, and do not be resentful;

For people rebel against whoever is set over them.

And you will never attain forbearance unless you hold fast

To reason, and know that what is not done beforehand

    To safeguard your honor lies far beyond reach;

And that the ailments of groaning men

Have their seat among gloaters and those who covet

The ample bounty of God's provisions,

From God's gifts; and whoever does not mix

Rashness with forbearance will submit or be trodden down.

And whoever digs for evil, when he brings it forth,

Will withdraw disgraced and afraid, or persist obstinately.
