The beloved grew angry with me when

I made mention of him in love verse.

And he says, “You exposed me

And stirred up the liar’s tales.”

Be gentle, my beloved, for I have lamented

The agonies of the despoiled heart.

I did not reveal my love, O Layla,

Nor was I one to arouse suspicion.

And I concealed love within my breast,

And the burning pangs of longing that melts me.

And I checked the torrent of tears,

And turned away from the watcher’s path,

    For fear of spiteful talebearers

And the malice of a close relation.

Why do I see my stubborn tears

More tender than a stranger’s tears?

Why have I weakened, and been betrayed by

My heart, so patient through calamities?

    Bewildered, ill-fated, bleeding

    At heart, with unceasing sobs.

Has wasting betrayed the secrets of hearts.

    Thinness exposed my innermost secret;

Was my sickness one of my sins?

I complain to you of burning pangs

Within my breast, kindling the flame.

My longing for you, for conversation

Sweet, and for thought so fertile,

Is the longing of thirsty doves

For a sip of sweet water.

O you who blame me, enough is what

I suffer from the beloved’s cruelty.

The memory of him has never left my heart,

    In sleep and in waking.

    And imagination indeed consoles me

    With his sweet, splendid apparition.
