O star, would you not—if I confide
O star, if I were to complain
To you my longing and passion—
Of passion and love's pain,

Keep the guarded secret,
Would you keep secret the heart's trove,
You who honor bonds of loyalty?
You who tend the weeping rain?

O star, I fear, if I explain
O star, I fear if I confide
To you my love and consuming passion,
Love's longing that resides,

That you will expose the buried love
You'd expose the buried love
And make people gloat over me.
And people would deride.
ياOh ليتَif only ليfor me خلّاa close friend فأشكوso I might lament

Oh, if only I had a close friend, so I could lament
Oh, if only I had a friend, to whom I could bare
What I suffer from my wounds.
The wounds I cannot repair.

Oh, if only I had tears, so I might soothe
Oh, if only I had tears to heal
What I endure, with wailing.
The sorrows I conceal.

I have no patience left for affliction,
I've no patience left for suffering,
For it has broken my wing.
My wings are withering.

Relentless longing has sorely tormented
Keen longing has let loose
My stubborn, unbridled heart.
My struggling, weary wings.

How many a grave calamity I have endured,
How many grave events I've borne
And never complained of my times.
Without complaining of my fate.

Never, on any day, was I prone to panic,
Never weak, never distraught
Nor overcome by anguish at what befell me.
Was I, whatever befell.

But life's bitter and its sweet
And its sweetness—enough to suffice me,
Have been enough for me.

Until love fletched
Until passion launched its arrow,
An arrow that pierced deep into my heart.
Piercing my soul's marrow.

Oh, if only the one who set the snares
Oh, that the one who set traps
For my soul knew my plight,
For my heart would know my state!

For perhaps he would be tender toward the weary one
Perhaps he would pity my pain
And bring relief through union.
And allow our souls to unite.

Or else, let him bring death close to my heart
Or put an end to me, and so
And sever my cords.
Loose the ropes that bind me to woe.

For I have despaired of the darkness,
For I'm tired of the darkness,
And have grown weary of the shadows.
Weary of the shadows' fall.
