O our nights in the valley of al-Salt, indeed,
O, our nights in Wadi As-Salt, you
The memory of you revisited my heart, and it yearned.
Have brought back memories of you, so we yearned

Longing stirred me toward the garden
Longing shook me for the garden where
Before which I used to meet the soft-voiced gazelle.
I used to see the doe frolic
كيفhow أنسىI forget ليلةًa night فيin ظلهits shade
إذwhen تواعدناwe promised each other لقاءa meeting فالتقيناand so we met
How can I forget a night in its shade,
How can I forget a night in its shade
When we promised to meet, and so we met?
When we promised to meet and we met
ضمناembraced us الروضthe garden طروباjoyful ضاحكاًlaughing
وحناand bent الدوحthe great trees عليناover us وأجناand gave shelter
The garden embraced us, joyful and laughing,
The garden hugged us laughing
And the great trees bent over us and gave shelter.
And the berries sang to us and we sang back

Here the brook sings joyfully,
And there are the birds in the branches singing
And there the birds sang among the branches.
And the meadow flowers in elation

And the blossoms of the hills, in ecstasy,
Dancing like swaying beauties
Dance like lovely women, swaying.
And the gentle branches are brought near by the breeze

And the east wind draws the supple branches close,
You see in the meadow one branch hug another
So among the great trees you see one branch embrace another.
And the moist breeze flows like magic
والنسيمand the breeze الرطبmoist يسريdrifts سحراًbefore dawn
حاملاًcarrying رجعthe echo حديثtalk الحبlove عناfrom us
And the moist breeze drifts before dawn,
Carrying the echo of our love talk
Bearing away the echo of our talk of love.
A wedding the ages have never seen

A wedding celebration—Time has never witnessed
The like in joyfulness and melody
Its equal in the grove for rapturous song and melody.
A secret in the heedlessness of time has passed
خلَسٌstolen moments فيin غفلةthe heedlessness of الدهرTime مضتpassed
نوّلَتناgranted us فيin الهوىlove ماwhat نتمنىwe wish for
Stolen moments passed while Time was heedless,
Granted us in passion what we wished
Granting us in love all we wished for.
So we spent our night in bliss
فقضيناso we spent ليلناour night فيin غبطةٍbliss
وعلىand with البرfidelity بعهديناto our two vows افترقناwe parted
So we spent our night in bliss,
And at dawn we parted with a pact
And we parted, faithful to our two vows.

لفحاتsearing gusts الوجدpassionate longing فيin القلبthe heart المعنىtormented
A dream passed, and nothing remained but
But touches of passion in the heart embedded
The searing gusts of longing in the tormented heart.
In my chest a pounding whenever

Within my breast is a throbbing heart that, whenever
The pact of the youth and love conjured
The days of youth and love stir its longing, goes mad.
How much have I stayed up at night reliving their memory
كمhow often سهرتُI stayed awake الليلthe night أحيىI revive ذكرهمtheir memory
قلِقَrestless المضجعthe bed لاnot أغمضI close جفناan eyelid
How often I stayed awake at night, reviving their memory,
Restless in bed, eyes unshut
Restless in bed, not closing an eyelid.
We recalled them on the pillow of sorrow

وحفظناهُمand we cherished them وإنand even if كانواthey had نسوّناthey forgot us
We have remembered them despite the vast distance of separation,
And kept them though they forgot us
And cherished them, even if they had forgotten us.

Is there a path to reunion, after
The home was devastated and they left us
The dwelling has grown distant and they and we have parted?
Joy returns to the valley, but can

And will companionship return to the valley, and will
We meet again in the garden under the berry tree here?
We meet in the garden beneath the great trees late at night?
