Is it my blood spilled upon your cheeks, O my hope,
My blood drips down upon your cheek, O my hope!
or wine the earliest ages hid away?
Or is it wine you've hidden from times of old?

No, it is my blood: the heart was fatally struck by the anguish
Nay, 'tis my blood, for my heart has grown deaf
of passion’s arrow, aimed by wide eyes.
To the arrow of love your eyes have struck cold.
جرحa wound بقلبيin my heart فلاso no موتdeath فينقذنيand thus rescue me
منfrom الشقاءmisery ولاnor ذاthis الجرحthe wound يندملheals
A wound is in my heart; no death comes to rescue me
A wound pierces my heart, no death rescues me
from misery, nor does this wound heal.
From misery, nor does this wound ever fold.
ولستand I am not اطمحI aspire أنto أحظىwin favor بقاتلتيwith my female slayer
وليسand there is no ليfor me بوصالٍof union يرتجىhoped for أملhope
And I do not aspire to win the woman who slays me,
I have no wish that my killer would favor me,
nor have I any hope of a longed-for union.
No hope of union that I dare to hold.
لاهُمَّO God لمdid not يبقleave هذاthis الحبlove ليfor me رمقاًa breath of life
وزادand increased وجديmy anguish وقدwhile already ضاقتgrew narrow بيfor me السبلthe paths
O God, this love has left me no breath of life,
Alas! No life remains for me in this love,
and deepened my anguish, while the paths grew narrow for me.
My passion spent, and all paths tightly scrolled.
لاهُمَّO God قدindeed قطّعتtore apart كبديmy liver لواعِجُهits burning pangs

O God, its burning pangs have torn my liver apart,
Alas! It shreds my liver with violent shoves,
and sicknesses and ailments have weakened my mind.
And my strength is sapped by diseases untold.
لاهُمَّO God بدِّدdispel بنورwith light منكfrom You ماwhat ازدحمتcrowded

O God, dispel with light from You what has crowded
Alas! Dispel with your light the swelling gloom
upon me—the darkness that ignorance has brought.
That ignorance piles on me, manifold.

نفسيmy soul بهwith it وهوايand my passion الحقtruth والعملand work
For I do not love passion—no! Nor has it enthralled
I love not love now, no, nor does my soul
my soul; my passion is truth and work.
Covet it, for my love is truth and the right road.
