Welcome! We have melted with longing, O spring.

    O light-hearted one, welcome, welcome!

    Whenever your wondrous countenance shines,

The earth rises, vying with the star in splendor.

And at the foot of my ribs a stricken one walks,

Who would have died but for memories of youth.

How strange: you depart for a time, then return,

And my spring has passed and has not returned.

Who, I wonder, told you the secrets of immortality,

So you warded off death and were not struck down?

Or is it the earth, seeking to endure,

That has learned how to endure through thrift,

And so wisely refused to expend

Its store of beauty until the Resurrection,

And clothed itself in a leafy robe of splendor

That never wears out as long as the world endures?

What a robe, embroidered with roses,

Worn every year, never taken off!

If only I had cloaks of its cloth,

I would water them then with my tears.

How very sweet your clear, beautiful face!

The hands of the ages have studded it with dew.

Many a soul, imprisoned for a long while,

As the songster among birds is caged,

    Has become free after bondage,

Feeding on the wind of deserts and rocks.

For it was not created to lie anchored in chains,

No, nor was it made for the veil.

How strange: in this world, money

Has veiled one of the shining stars!

O spring of the earth, what an excellent cure

For souls that have nothing but cares,

Wherever you unfold what lies folded within them

And scatter it when the breeze passes!

Alas for lovers, the masters of passion,

[Created] in the universe to watch over the stars!

    وقفوا في كلّ دارٍ بلقعِ

    Their sustenance was allotted before the cradles;

They stood in every desolate dwelling.

They kept their pledges to people in this world,

Yet their faithfulness was of no avail.

O flowers, perfume the skirts of the winds,

If they pass above the fresh gardens.

Entrust to them, whenever morning dawns,

A fragrance that spares the need for my books.

My life has become exile and uprooting,

And whispered communion, and watching the bright stars.

Then, when a pillar of dawn appears

After a night like a pied crow,

I say to myself, while sleep shuns me:

    "What—even estrangement in my bed?"

I—were it not for memories of youthful days—

Would say, "O soul, go if you wish."

Yet whenever an east wind blows,

It revives my heart with a sweet memory.

I do not care if I settle in the West,

So long as the sun of hopes has not set.

For a person's life in this existence

Is the soul's desire, whether it is aware or not.

And my weeping for those enfolded in graves

Is like my solace in those who remain with me.
