O snow, you have stirred my sorrows.

You have reminded me of my family in Lebanon.

By God, tell my brothers on my behalf:

He still honors the sanctity of the pledge.

O snow, you have reminded me of the valley,

listening intently to its singing brook.

How often I sat in its tranquil embrace,

so it was as though I were in the garden of eternity.

O snow, you have reminded me of my mother,

of days when she spent the night concerned for me,

full of love, unsure how to hold me close,

showing me tenderness for fear of the cold.

O snow, you have reminded me of the hearth,

of days when we sang around it,

bowing humbly before it as though it were a mosque,

and as though we were ascetics in self-denial.

O snow, you, in your dazzling robe,

and in its purity, are like the poet's inner nature.

If you knew humankind, O pure one,

you would keep far, far away from them.

If you did not melt from the heart's sigh,

or from my tears, pouring like the clouds,

I would build from you temples of love,

and dig my grave within their corners.

Oh, how lovely the star when it shines,

and snow shrouds the earth in ghostly forms,

    and the hapless poet, wailing,

spends the nights bereft of reason.

    أو كنتَ تعلمُ أنتَ في عسر

    If you are ignorant, you are at ease;

or if you know, you are in hardship.

I do not think the drama of life

has acts of jest without earnestness.

O soul, call upon the Lord of the Throne:

O Provider for the cawing raven in the nest!

And arm yourself with patience, then walk on:

After the ebb, the tide must flow.
