    O dark-red wine, O tawny wine,

The darkness of night has crept in.

And the world has called to battle,

And the army of sorrow has answered the call.

So come to me, gleaming and mingled with water,

That we may pierce the veils in the gloom,

And catch up with those who journeyed by night

And made for a spacious dwelling.

They are the poets, who have flown

    To their homelands out of love;

    And the lovers have traversed

The stages of their path in leaps.

Come, O daughter of the grape-

cluster; let us plunder our life to the full,

    And roam through God's expanse

Until we reach the shooting stars.

So how wretched is the one who worries

    About the world—and how foolish!
