Let me, my dear companions, sleep in bliss,

for my soul has grown drunk on the wine of love.

And my spirit has had its fill of these nights,

and has grown weary and bored with these days.

Light candles around my body and burn incense,

and pour perfume plentifully over my feet.

    كذا طيّبوا شَعري بمسكٍ مفتَّت

    Cast roses and narcissus upon my body;

likewise scent my hair with crumbled musk.

And come, look, then read what is inscribed

by death's hand, as a remembrance, upon the expanse of my brow.

Let this slumber spread his arms around me,

for wakefulness has wearied my eyelids.

And bring a lyre and play it within my hearing,

from which note after note resounds.

And blow on the nay and reed pipes, by God,

for with my whole being I yearn for melodies.

And weave a veil around my heart with their enchantment,

for behold, it has raced swiftly toward a halt.

And sing Ruhā, then spread for my feelings

a soft bed of wondrous meanings.

And then look at my eyes—how the rays of the

hopes have taken shape there and come to rest.

And hold back your tears, then lift your heads,

like flowers whose crowns rise in the morning.

You will see that between the sky and my bed

the bride of death has shone like a flame.

Hark! Hold your breath and listen with me

to the soft flutter of her wings, listening intently.

Come to me, sons of my mother, and kiss

my brow in farewell, with smiles and joy.

With gentle eyelids, kiss me, and kiss

my eyelids too, for that is the finest kiss.

And let the children around me touch

with their fingertips that beautiful neck of mine.

And bring old men near me to bless

my brow with their hands, with every wrinkle upon them.

And let the neighborhood's daughters approach my bed,

and gaze at the vision of God in the center of my eye,

and hear my breaths swiftly keeping pace with

the echo of an eternal spiritual melody.
