It is Time, which fears neither spears nor keen swords,

Yet Time fears the gifts within you.

    حَقِيقَتَها فَاعلَم وَحدّ العَوَاقِبَا

    So do not be conceited about yourself and heedless;

Know its true nature, and determine the consequences.

Nor be among those whom ambitions have made reckless,

And who therefore refuse to fulfill a duty owed to truth.

Follow in my footsteps, you whom I see striving

To attain what you desire in this age.

For I am no hater; rather, I am the one

Who has never ceased speaking from the pulpit of sincerity.

Then from humiliation's depths you will ascend,

Upon the steps of dignity, rising through the ranks.

For events have brought me together with the nights,

And the nights' pledges proved false.

So I gave up trusting Time's truthfulness, because I

Saw my time turn aside from love of truth.

And resolve has accompanied me, never betraying me,

Even if calamities sank their claws into me.

If I have nothing but an unbowed soul,

God insists that it meet the demands.

It is pride enough for me to give it freely,

Eager to serve God's creatures and justice.

For the reeds of victory belong only to one who stands

In this age's arena, reckoning with Time.

And a man is only one you see defending

The beloved homeland, with heart and body.

So tell whoever seeks to violate our rights:

You will be defeated, even if you are victorious.

For it is only the soul—a Creator's breath—

So far be it from the soul to delight in calamities.

And be discerning, you who hold its reins:

If it bolts, the earth sways to one side with it.

    ولكِن قَومي مَن أذَلّوا المَصاعِبَا

    For those you see abased are not my people;

But my people are those who have humbled hardships.

Ours is every heart, with every resolve within it,

From which battalions are mustered for defense.

For we, sons of the desert Arabs, have been and still are

Surpassing foreigners through what the Lord bestowed on us.

Who among mortals, I wonder, is as exalted as Muhammad,

As high in glory and as lofty in virtues?

And who is like those who led the caliphate after him,

And formed the sides of the edifice of justice that came from him?

Are we not those who ruled humankind and subdued the

Lands, and displayed wonders in wars?

And every follower fell short of catching them,

The morning they mounted glory's back and shoulders.

For how many a state have we built and ruled with resolve

    Sharper-edged than slender, gleaming swords!

And long ago we were as our people are today:

When peoples are arrayed, we rise through the ranks.

For the days have never told, from Adam's time

To this day, of a people who surpass the Arabs.

Thus we built institutes for the sciences,

And raised schools there for the people of the earth.

And peoples have acquired knowledge from us,

As long ago they acquired doctrines from us.

And we are those who excelled in eloquence in prose,

And displayed marvels in composing poetry.

And proverbs about us spread through our immense generosity,

So in bounty we were seas and clouds.

Thus we are recorded in the sources; and we have

Unbowed souls that attain their aims.

Through our homeland—were it not for Him whose throne is exalted—

The earth would boast over the sky and stars.

It gained honor through the grace of Isa and Ahmad,

Trailing its locks upon the heads of the Pleiades.

Dawning places of light and a place where wisdom descends,

And signs of inspiration that remain noble.

So, O my homeland, may you remain the first spot

On earth to reveal wonders to humankind.

You have enfolded relics; were you to unfold them,

The world would be too small for them, in intellect and talent.

So do not think the people too distant to visit,

Nor suppose the sea has become a barrier.

You drew people's hearts until you saw them

Making pilgrimage in throngs—you are attraction enough.

And by the sanctity of a covenant between us that I have known,

And by the dignity of a soul that fears no trials,

You are surely unassailable among those you have known,

Who fend calamities from you with their lives.

Warriors who have indeed forged their souls into spearheads,

And from their resolve drawn forth spears and keen swords.

And by your right, O Liberty, whom I have loved,

And spent my life fighting for love of her,

And by the mystery of beauty in you, whose love enraptured

The sons of the East in reverence, so they settled in western lands,

And by the beauty of your kindness, for whose sake grows sweet

A torment that has become unceasing for the people,

And by the aspect of radiance that shone from you, which I deemed

A blazing meteor over the face of the earth:

You are surely the world's desire and its utmost wish,

And the finest thing it has found fitting.

So no injustice is to be feared, for you are justice,

Nor darkness, for light erases deep gloom.
