خُلِقتُI was created ولكنbut كيso that أموتI die بهاfor her حُبّاof love
لِذاكَfor that reason تَرَانيyou see me مُستَهاماًbesotted بِهَاwith her صَبّاlovesick
I was created, but to die of love for her.
I was created just to die of love for her
That is why you see me besotted with her, lovesick.
That is why you see me infatuated with her passionately
وإنيand I مَشُوقٌfilled with longing كُلّماwhenever شابَgrew gray رأسهُhis head
بحُبِّwith love for التيher whom يشتاقُهَاhe yearns for her كُلّماwhenever شَبّاhe reached youth
And I am one who yearns whenever his head grows gray,
And I yearn more and more as my hair turns grey
with love for her whom he yearns for whenever he reaches youth.
Out of love for the one whose longing makes me age
إِذاwhen مَلأتfill دَهريmy lifetime الخُطوبُcalamities فإنّهَاthen they

When calamities fill my life, they
When my life fills up with troubles, they will surely
will surely find an ample lodging in my spacious breast.
Find in my vast chest a vast receptacle
يُصَاحِبُنيaccompanies me صَبرٌpatience أُكَتِّمُهُI conceal it إِذاwhen

لَدىamid نُوَبِthe ordeals of الأيّامِthe days نادَيتُهُI called it لَبّىit answered
Patience accompanies me; I keep it hidden, and when
Patience accompanies me, I conceal it when
amid the days' ordeals I call it, it answers.
In times of adversity I call upon it and it responds
فماfor not أناI ممّنone of those who إِنif ترَامَتcasts far away بِهِwith him النّوَىseparation

For I am not one whom, if separation casts him far away,
I'm not one whom when intentions turn against
the world terrifies, even if it is filled with terror.
The world can terrify, even if filled with horror
ولكنّbut ليI have فيat سَفحِthe foot of صِنّينَSannine مَوطِناًa home

But I have a home at the foot of Sannine;
But I have as my refuge the slopes of China
whenever I recall my kin there, I
When I remember my family there, I weep profusely
I summon a rain of الدمعَtears منصَبّاpouring down
أُعلَلّلُI console نفسيmyself إنif سئِمتُI grow weary بِعَودَةٍwith a return
on remembering them, call down a pouring rain of tears.
When I complain of homesickness, I make excuses
I soothe myself, if I grow weary, with the hope of return;
But oh times, curse them, curse them
وَلكِنّهاbut they are الأيّامthe days تَبّاًa curse لهاupon them تَبّاa curse
فَلِلّهِso, to God هاتِيكَthose الرّبىhills وربوعهاand their dwelling places
but such are the days—a curse upon them, a curse!
So by God, take away these meadows and meadowettes
To God belong those hills and their dwelling places,
For I have wasted my heart among their sands
فإنيَfor I قَدindeed ضَيّعتُlost فيin تربهاtheir soil القَلبَاthe heart
وَياand oh حَبّذاhow lovely ذاكَthat النّسِيمُbreeze فإنّنيfor I
for I have lost my heart in their soil.
And oh, delightful is the breeze, for it
And oh, how lovely that breeze! For I
Revives me when that breeze blows
لَيُنعِشُنيsurely revives me ذاكَthat النّسِيمُbreeze إِذاwhen هَبّاit blows
تَنادَواthey called out بدستُورٍfor a constitution وقالواand they said لَنَاto us انظُرُواlook
am surely revived by that breeze whenever it blows.
They called for a constitution and told us: "Look
They called out for a constitution and told us, 'Look:
We have driven poverty and drought away from you"
فإنّاfor we طَرَدناdrove away الفَقرَpoverty عَنكُمُfrom you والجدباand drought

for we have driven poverty and drought away from you.'
But a mocking flash of lightning appeared to us in the distance
And a smiling flash of lightning appeared to us in the distance,
So we thought our dry land had become moist
فَخِلنَاso we thought بأنthat قَدalready صَارَhad become يابِسُنَاour dry ground رَطَبَاmoist

so we thought our dry ground had turned moist.
It was nothing but a deceiving mirage that made
But it was only rainless lightning that made the sky smile,
The sky laugh, leaving people mourning fate's mourning
وخَلّفَand left behind قَوماًa people نادبينَlamenting المُنَىhopes نَدبَاin lamentation

and left a people lamenting their hopes in grief.
And the caller amongst them cried one day as if
And the call once raised about it became as though it were
Screaming down ravines until he passed away
صِيَاحٌa cry بِقِيعانٍon open plains إِلىuntil أنthat قضىit met نحبَأdeath

عَلىat مَهَلٍleisure ياO دولَةَstate of التُّركِthe Turks واسمعيand listen
a cry on open plains, until it died.
Slow down, Turkish state, and listen
Easy now, O state of the Turks, and listen:
For in truth I have not committed a sin
فإنيfor I بقولِby speaking الحقّthe truth لمdid not أرتكِبI commit ذَنبَاa sin
مشىwalked العِلمًknowledge فيthrough شرقthe east of البلادِthe lands وَغَربِهَاand their west
for I have committed no sin by speaking the truth.
Knowledge has spread in the east and west of the lands
Knowledge walked through the lands, east and west,
But in Turkey it has lost its way
ولكنbut بتركِياin Turkey لقدindeed ضَيّعَit lost الدّربَاthe way
فماso what تَنفَعُbenefit الأحزَابُthe parties وهيَwhile they are كَثيرَةٌnumerous
but in Turkey it has surely lost its way.
The many parties do not benefit
So what use are the parties, numerous as they are,
If the parties do not benefit the people
إِذاif كانتare الأحزابُthe parties لاnot تَنفَعُbenefit الشّعبَاthe people
يَقُولونَthey say إِنّthat التُّركَthe Turks أُسدٌlions أشَاوِسٌfearless
if the parties do not benefit the people?
They say the Turks are ferocious lions
They say the Turks are fearless lions;
Where were the Turks in times of strife?
كماةُthe champions of التركِthe Turks كانواwere لدىamid الوَغَىthe fray
ولمand did not يدفعواdrive back البلغارَthe Bulgarians عنهُمfrom them ولاnor السّربَاthe Serbs
the champions of the Turks were amid the fray,
They did not drive away the Bulgarians or Serbians from them
yet they drove neither the Bulgarians nor the Serbs away from them.
It is nothing but ignorance spreading its carpet over them
فماfor not هُوَit إِلاّexcept الجهلُignorance مدّspread بساطهُits carpet

عليهمover them وأرخىand lowered منfrom غَياهِبِهَِits deep darkness حُجبَاveils
For it was only ignorance that spread its carpet
And letting down its barriers of darkness upon them
over them and let down veils from its deep darkness.
I pray to God we do not return to a state
ألاoh لاnever أراناlet us see اللهُGod عَوداًa return لِدَولَةٍto a state

Oh, may God never let us see a return to a state
Where we are its prisoners and it loots our money
where we would be captives and our wealth plunder.
Were we not the first to enjoy life in its shade
ألَسنَاare we not الأولىthose who عَافواspurned الحَيَاةَlife بِظِلّهَاin its shadow

Are we not those who spurned life beneath its shadow
And traveled God's lands settling in the west?
and roamed God's lands and settled in the West?
How many wanderers roamed every part of earth
فَكَمand how many منof شريدٍan exile طافَroamed فيthrough كلّevery بقعةٍregion
منof الأرضِthe earth حتىuntil كادhe almost يكتشفdiscover القطبَاthe Pole
And how many an exile has roamed through every corner
Until they almost discovered the poles?
of the earth, until he almost discovered the Pole!
Many an ignorant man consumed by bigotry

فَأعماهُso it blinded him واغتَالand murdered البصيرَةَinsight واللُّبَاand reason
And in many an ignorant man fanaticism raged,
Which blinded him and killed insight and perception
so it blinded him and murdered insight and reason.

He ignorantly calls for holy war, not knowing
His call for religion is condemnable in its consequence
that his call for religion has a blameworthy outcome.
So the friend of recklessness may one day know, if he become guided
لِيَعلَمlet him learn أليفُthe companion of الطيشِrecklessness يوماًone day إذاif اهتدىhe finds guidance
بأنّthat أُسودَthe lions of الغابِthe forest لاnot تَرهَبُfear الضّبَاthe lizard
Let the companion of recklessness learn one day, if he finds guidance,
That the wolves of the forest are not scared of hyenas
that the lions of the forest do not fear the lizard.
If one man chokes on his own saliva
إذاif كانَis إنسانٌa person يَغَصّchokes بِريقِهِon his saliva

فَكيفَthen how بِموجِwith the waves of البَحرِthe sea يشرَبُهhe drinks it غَبّاon alternate days
If a man chokes on his saliva,
How can he drink an ocean wave greedily?
how, then, could he drink the sea's waves on alternate days?

When poetry's spreading tree withers, I water it
With the saliva of someone who got lost praising them vainly
with the saliva of a reed pen that swaggered proudly in their praise.
