    Ah, where is my cup? Fill it to the brim, and I shall drink.

    For what have I to do with the days that come and go?

    Let me give life its due through merrymaking,

    And steal life's pleasures and plunder them.

    And I recite my poems, with joy in my heart.

    And in drinking a cup of wine lies what the soul seeks.

    For how often my soul has echoed the poet of Kindah,

    Whenever I passed a night of sorrow, tossing and turning:

    “Ah, if only I knew: shall I compose a poem

    And neither complain in it nor voice reproach?”

    So I said to her, “Easy now; your reproach is sweet,

    But your patience with the days is sweeter.”

    وعاداتها تعطي ومن ثَمَّ تسلبُ

    And I said: such is the world—it turns and takes away;

    And its ways are to give, and then to take away.

    Enough that I have spent my life, and still go on

    Making merry and giving delight in the gathering of friends.

    ولولا الدّجى مالاحَ في الافق كوكبُ

    And I have times of solitude in which I have loved night's darkness;

    And were it not for the darkness, no star would gleam on the horizon.
