Su'ad secretly sent a messenger above suspicion,
Su'ad sneaked in an innocent messenger,
A maidservant, who came as one keeping hidden.
And summer came behaving bashfully.
جاءَcame الرَسولُthe messenger بِقَرطاسٍwith a sheet of paper بِخاتَمِهِwith its seal
وَفيand in الصَحيفَةِthe letter سِحرٌenchantment خُطَّwas inscribed بِالقَلَمِwith the pen
The messenger came with a sheet of paper bearing its seal,
The messenger came with a scroll sealed,
And in the letter was enchantment inscribed with the pen.
In it was magic penned with a pen.
فيهِin it فُتونُenchantments of هَوىًlove طَلَّتshe kept (text uncertain) تُغَيِّبُهُshe conceals it

In it lay love's enchantments, which she kept concealing
In it were passions of love that made him absent
From the ignorant, though they are not hidden from the perceptive.
From the ignorant and what the wise cannot grasp.
وَقَدand indeed فَهِمتُI understood الَّذيwhat أَخفَتshe concealed فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her

I had understood what she concealed, so I said to her:
And I understood what she was hiding so I said to her
Speak openly with 'no' and 'yes,' in plain words.
Revealing with clarity and pleasure of clear words.

She said: Come, if you wish, in concealment.
She said: come if you wish hidden,
The decision is yours, O Raqqi; set your terms.
And rule is your rule, O wise one, so arbitrate.

Come forward, Rabi'a, into ample room and ease,
I presented myself in vastness and ease
On a night without moonlight; seize the darkness.
Not in Qamraa or darkness so take advantage.

So I visited her, my gaze lowered to my foot,
I visited her my gaze upon my feet
And I had clothed myself in two cloaks of darkness.
Having worn two cloaks of darkness.

Then happened what happened; no one knew of it.
What happened happened none knows of it
I did no wrong, nor was I put off with prohibitions.
Nor have I been hurt or become illicit.

Su'da visited you, though Su'da is far away from you;
Su'ad visited you but left you sleepless
She kept you awake, though she did not visit from nearby.
She did not visit you from other nations.

Welcome to your phantom, O Su'da, as it calls on us—
Hello to your specter O Su'ad that came in the dark
A phantom that journeys without a star or a landmark.
A specter that moves without star or flag.
أَنتِyou الضَجيعُthe bedfellow إِذاwhen ماever نِمتُI sleep فيin حُلُميmy dream

You are my bedfellow when I sleep, in my dream,
You are my slumber when I sleep in my dreams
And you are the star when the eye does not sleep.
And you are the star if eyes do not sleep.

How false are the eye and dreams, every one!
My eyes and dreams never lie altogether
Is my dream ever truthful about union with her?
My dreams speak truth once in their connection.

Say 'yes'; if you say it, it is beneficial.
Say yes, it will surely profit if you say
It is not 'perhaps'; 'perhaps' is patience until 'yes.'
Not perhaps or perhaps, patience to profit.

You bestowed a favor upon us; I do not deny it,
You granted me favors I do not deny
Until I am hidden in the grave's burial niche.
Until he disappears in an accursed stoning.

My heart is sick, and love's disease has sickened it.
My heart is sick and the illness of love sickened it
If you wished, you could cure the heart of sickness.
If you wished you could heal the heart of sickness.

She said: Your heart is divided among fair women;
She said: your heart is divided among the whites
What need have I of a divided heart from you?
I have no need in a heart divided from you.

You are the fickle one who took another in my place;
You are the one who switched me for another
You slighted me and bought meanness at the cost of nobility.
You fell short of me and bought evil with good.

I had sworn that I was [free] of love for you, yet I did not
I swore I would never love you but
Keep my oath, though I had sworn it solemnly.
My oath was strong, I exaggerated in swearing.

I seek God's forgiveness; the heart has softened, and there is no
I ask God for forgiveness, my heart has softened
Kinship between me and you, O Raqqi.
Between me and you O wise one there is mercy.

If only whoever blamed us for love had tried it!
I wish who blames us for love tries it
If he tasted what I have tasted, he would not blame.
If he tastes what I tasted he will not blame.

Love is an intractable sickness with no cure,
Love is a hidden illness with no cure
Except the breath of a sweet-breathed beloved,
Except the breeze of a beloved with sweet scent.

Or a kiss obtained from a mouth in stealth.
Or a kiss from a mouth taken stealthily
And a mouth I press against a mouth is not forbidden.
What is forbidden is a mouth I attached to a mouth.

This is forbidden to whoever counts it a minor lapse,
This is forbidden to one who counts it as sin
And the Merciful will not punish us for minor lapses.
The Merciful will not punish us for suspicions.

The heart went mad for Su'da in its waywardness;
My heart strayed, O Su'ad, and did not stray
If only my heart had not gone mad for you, O Su'd!
I wish my heart O Su'ad did not stray.

You are she whose love bequeathed to my heart
You who made my heart love you
A deep-seated sickness and yearning without end.
An imported illness and endless longing.

You were created from musk, while other people were made
You were created from musk and people are
From sticky clay, from a clod of dusky, dried clay.
Created from kneaded clay of crumbled puss.

God has fashioned no human in your likeness
God created no human after Joseph among Arabs or non-Arabs
Since Yusuf, among Arabs or non-Arabs.
Like you from a perfected brown idol.

Your upper body is formed from a straight, dusky spear-shaft,
Above you is a litter on a pile
And your wrap lies over a heaped-up mound of you.
Her buttocks accumulated as a statue.

Or a meadow sprinkled by downpours and steady rains,
She walks swaying like a drunk made to stumble.

Or an egg in a sand dune, or a pearl that emerged
Her dimples say and her behind seats her
From a surging sea of foaming, crashing waves.
From behind her, I have reached the corner so take your chance.

At the touching of the Corner, I met a beautiful woman,
So I took my chance then stood up to supplicate
Radiant, with shining cheeks, like an idol.
If not for that I would not have stood up.

Her buttocks quiver; her flanks are slender.
Until when she left I bid farewell she looked back
She walks gently, like a drunken drinker's gait.
And I said you are of my worries and my night talks.

Her singing-maids say, as her buttocks weigh her down,
Her companions said this is Rabi’ah
From behind her: You have reached the Corner; touch it.
He is the sedition of nations.
فَاِسلَمَتso she submitted ثُمَّthen قامَتshe stood ساعَةًa while فَدَعَتthen prayed

So she submitted, then stood awhile and prayed.
This is the meaning that suits you
I stood praying too; but for her, I would not have stood.
So cover up in heavy clothing and darkness.

At last, when she departed, I greeted her, and she turned.
The devil of his nation met you in ihram
So I said: You are among my cares and sorrows.
So seek refuge in God from the devil.

She said: And who are you? Her attendants said to her:
She said: I seek refuge in my Lord from you and covered up
This is Rabi'a; this is the temptation of peoples.
In the manner clothing edges like an ostrich.
هَذاthis is المُعَنّىthe love-tormented one الَّذيwhose كانَتused to مَناسِبُهُhis love verses

This is the love-tormented one whose love verses used to
I said: vows and God’s covenant you betrayed
Reach you; veil yourself with a cloak and darkness.
No covenant to the betrayer who takes covenants lightly.
شَيطانُthe devil of أُمَّتِهِhis people لاقاكِhas met you مُحرِمَةًin ritual consecration

The devil of his people has met you while you are in consecration;
Did you not say yes, she said: that was an illusion
So take refuge in God from the devil.
Can a person be taken to account for illusions?
قالَتshe said أَعوذُI seek refuge بِرَبّيin my Lord مِنكَfrom you وَاِستَتَرَتand veiled herself

She said: I seek refuge in my Lord from you—and veiled herself
We repented, fasted, and prayed to our Creator
With a [hand], its fingertips supple as 'anam shoots.
While you did not repent of any sin or fast.
قُلتُI said الذِمامُthe pledge وَعَهدُand the covenant of اللَهِGod خُنتِyou betrayed بِهِin it

لاno عَهدَcovenant لِلغادِرِfor the treacherous الخَتّارِthe betrayer لِلذِمَمِof pledges
I said: The pledge and God's covenant—you have betrayed them!
I blamed myself for spending my hatred on her
No covenant holds with the treacherous betrayer of pledges.
And her stinginess, and I cracked my teeth in regret.
أَلَمdid you not تَقوليsay نَعَمyes قالَتshe said بَلىyes indeed وَهَماًmistakenly

Did you not say 'yes'? She said: Yes, mistakenly,
So may God distance a human who persists
On my part; is a person held accountable for a mistake?
In loving a human but does not persist.
تُبناwe repented وَصُمناand fasted وَصَلَّيناand prayed لِخالِقِناto our Creator

We repented, fasted, and prayed to our Creator,
But you did not repent of any sin, nor did you fast.

So I blamed myself for lavishing my affection on her,
And for her stinginess; I gnashed my teeth in regret.

So may God banish a person and cast him far away,
Who sustained love for someone who did not sustain it.
