I am disobedient to the All-Merciful,

    because of my madness for Rukhāṣ;

    then to all people,

    both near and far.

    لَم أَنَل مِنهُ اِفتِراصي

    And Rukhāṣ of al-Karkh is a gazelle;

I have found no chance to seize it.

And long, indeed, at the doors

of al-Khuraymī, has my pursuit lasted,

in hope of catching a gazelle

    skittish and elusive.

Catching it is harder than hunting

beasts of prey and young she-camels.

    O Rukhāṣ, O Rukhāṣ of

    al-Karkh, you with the braids,

and gleaming white front teeth like lightning

    flashing in towering clouds;

then a rump like a dune of sand,

    and a slender midriff.

I, for preferring you, all my days

    face quarrels and seize forelocks.

I care nothing for whoever reproaches me

over you, or seeks to belittle me.

You have indeed tormented my soul:

so when shall I be free of you?

So fear the All-Merciful in our affair,

and beware the Day of Retribution,

a scene where one is seized by the feet

    and, there, by the forelocks.

Ask about the poets among people:

have they dived to my depths?

I have uttered verse that brings the white-footed ibex down

from the tops of the strongholds.

And the beautiful women are seductresses,

    eager to capture me.

We have urged one another to love me—

    how fine that mutual urging!

    And a generous drinking companion,

    bright of face and defiant,

    a Qurayshi from Banū ʿAbd

    Manāf, among their foremost nobles,

lavish in good works, never looking

    to economize on them,

    squandering wealth on

    pleasures, feared for his retribution—

indeed, she has given me and him drink—

    a singing girl with braids—

    in ewers of silver,

    not ewers of lead.

And with us is one dark of skin,

like a Zanj man, standing erect.

    That is disobedience to

God, and my mind is set on sins.
