علىdespite ماwhat كانthere was منof شنأٍhatred ووترِand a blood-debt
Lo, carry to the sons of Badr a message,
Listen: convey a message to the sons of Badr,
despite all the enmity and blood-debt that have passed:
despite whatever hatred and blood-debt there has been,
بأنيthat I لمnot أزلI cease to be لكمُto you صديقاًa friend
أدافعI ward off عنfrom فزارةFazarah كلevery أمرِdanger
I have never ceased to be your friend,
that I have always been your friend.
warding every peril away from Fazārah.
I ward off every danger from Fazarah;
أسالمI make peace with سلمكمthose at peace with you وأردand I repel عنكمfrom you
فوارسhorsemen أهلthe people of نجرانNajran وحَجرِand Hajr
I make peace where you make peace, and turn away from you
I make peace with those at peace with you, and repel from you
the horsemen of Najrān and Ḥajr.
the horsemen of Najran and Hajr.
وكانand was أبيmy father ابنُthe son of عمكمyour paternal uncle زيادٌZiyad
صفيَّthe close friend of أبيكمyour father بدرBadr بنson of عمروAmr
My father Ziyād was your cousin,
And my father, your cousin Ziyad, was
the chosen friend of your father, Badr ibn ʿAmr.
the close friend of your father, Badr ibn Amr.
فألجأتمso you forced to seek refuge أخاthe brother of الغدراتtreacheries قيساًQays
فقدfor indeed أفعمتمُyou have filled to overflowing إيغارَburning resentment صدريmy breast
Then you forced Qays—that man of treacheries—to seek refuge,
So you drove Qays, the brother of treacheries, to seek refuge;
and made resentment brim within my breast.
for you have filled my breast with burning resentment.
فحسبيso enough for me منagainst حذيفةHudhayfah ضمُjoining قيسQays
وكانand was البدءthe beginning منfrom حملHamal بنson of بدرِBadr
For me, Ḥudhayfah’s taking Qays in is grievance enough;
So joining Qays is enough for me against Hudhayfah,
yet the beginning came from Ḥaml ibn Badr.
and it was Hamal ibn Badr who began it.
فإماso if ترجعواyou return أرجعI will return إليكمto you
وإنand if تأبواyou refuse فقدthen indeed أوسعتُI have made ample عذريmy justification
So if you turn back, I shall turn back to you;
So if you return, I will return to you;
but if you refuse, I have offered excuse enough.
and if you refuse, I have amply justified myself.
