Ah, who will carry word from me to my peers?

For I deal in neither injustice nor slander.

For I do not unjustly anger my peers,

And I am content with reproaches.

For I have never seen the like of one who courts abasement,

Though on earth he has room to travel and settle.

    And some sojourns in lands

Where a young man is humiliated are nothing but hardship.

And some speech has no supporting rope,

Like churning water with no vessel.

And some traits of peoples are a disease,

Like the disease of avarice, which has no remedy.

And for some disease a cure is sought,

But the disease of folly has no cure.

A man loves to meet with bliss,

Yet God allows nothing but what He wills.

And whoever is wise and has not known misery,

Fate will one day alight in his courtyard.

The daughters of time assail him in turn until

They chip away at him as a vessel is chipped.

And whatever hardships befall a clan,

Ease will come after their severity.

So tell the one who guards against the onslaught of death:

Take care—for caution will not help you.

For the greedy man gives no wealth through greed,

And wealth may be forgotten amid generosity.

And wealth is of no use to the miser,

Nor does a gift bring its giver low.

He who is rich in soul owes his wealth to no possession,

And poverty of soul is misery as long as it lives.

A man longs for the nights to keep coming,

As though their ending were his own end.
