    O sorrowful one who spends life dejected,

    And an ailing one whose cure has baffled the physician,

    Despair has settled over your face until

    Cheerfulness fled, wailing and terrified.

    حيث وجهته أراع القلوبا

    Eyes send sorrows like an arrow;

    Wherever you aim it, it terrifies hearts.

    فيك تزداد ما رأيت طروبا

    Forever you are the sworn ally of sorrows;

    They grow within you whenever you see someone merry.

    And whenever you see a beautiful face,

    You go away angry and scowling because of its beauty.

    And whenever you hear a melodious voice,

    Or an eloquent man at a gathering, or an orator,

    Or praise of someone, because of that you spend

    A month sleepless and distressed.

    And whenever someone among mankind is said to be rich,

    The words kindle a blaze within your breast.

    All this, though from the blessings of the All-Merciful

    You have received shares and a portion.

    What would you have shown the world,

    Had you been destitute and stricken by misfortune?
