قارض الشعر أو كتب
You are the pride of everyone
who composes verse or writes.
لكfor you فيin النفسthe soul رتبةa rank
لك في النفس رتبة
عندهاbeside it تصغرgrow small الرتبthe ranks
عندها تصغر الرتب
Within my soul you hold a rank
beside which all ranks grow small.
وإذاand if كنتI am معجباadmiring
وإذا كنت معجبا
بمزاياكfor your merits لاعجبno wonder
بمزاياك لاعجب
And if I am filled with admiration
for your merits, it is no wonder.
ليسis not منone who يقرعclinks الكؤوthe cups (first part)
ليس من يقرع الكؤو
س(completes 'cups') كمنlike one who قارعbattled النوبcalamities
س كمن قارع النوب
He who clinks the cups is not
like one who has battled calamities.
لاno ولاnor كلevery ناظمversifier
لا ولا كل ناظم
يسلبcarries off اللبthe mind انif نسبsings of love
يسلب اللب ان نسب
No, nor does every versifier
captivate the mind when he sings of love.
كمhow many a هجومassailant علىof العلىthe heights
كم هجوم على العلى
وهوthough he is منfrom عصعصthe tailbone الذنبthe tail
وهو من عصعص الذنب
How many a man storms the heights,
though he is from the tail's very tailbone!
انif ينلhe attains بغيةa desired aim فكمthen how often
ان ينل بغية فكم
عميhas been blind الدهرTime فيin الاربwishes
عمي الدهر في الارب
If he attains his wish, how often
has Time been blind in granting wishes!
انتyou بدرa full moon بكby you اهتدىfound guidance
انت بدر بك اهتدى
قومناour people فيin دجىthe darkness of الكربdistress
قومنا في دجى الكرب
You are a full moon that guided
our people through the darkness of distress.
بكin you ياO فارسknight العربthe Arabs
بك يا فارس العرب
تفخرtakes pride الشامDamascus معtogether with حلبAleppo
تفخر الشام مع حلب
In you, O knight of the Arabs,
Damascus takes pride, along with Aleppo.
مجلسa gathering ضمbrought together شملناour company
مجلس ضم شملنا
بعدماafter طالgrew long مغتربabsence abroad
بعدما طال مغترب
A gathering that reunited us,
after a long absence,
ضاقwas too brief عنfor بثexpressing بعضsome of ماwhat
ضاق عن بث بعض ما
بيwithin me للقياكat meeting you منof طربrapture
بي للقياك من طرب
was too brief for me to express even part
of my rapture at meeting you.
انindeed شوقيmy longing اليكfor you شوa longing (first part)
ان شوقي اليك شو
قٌ(completes 'longing') إلىfor معدنthe mine الأدبletters
قٌ إلى معدن الأدب
Indeed, my longing for you is a longing
for the mine of letters.
وإذاand if لمnot يكنthere is سبيa way (first part)
وإذا لم يكن سبي
ل(completes 'way') إلىto القربcloseness أوor سببa means
ل إلى القرب أو سبب
And if there is no way
to draw near, nor any means,
فاجعلواthen make الكتبthe letters بينناbetween us
فاجعلوا الكتب بيننا
خيرthe best رسلmessengers ومرتقبand something awaited
خير رسل ومرتقب
then make the letters between us
the best of messengers, eagerly awaited.
فهيfor they are للسرfor secrets ضامنa safeguard
فهي للسر ضامن
وهيand they are للفضلfor excellence مطلبa means of pursuit
وهي للفضل مطلب
For they are a safeguard for secrets,
and a means of seeking excellence.
وعسىand may انthat يقدرordain اللGod (first part)
وعسى ان يقدر الل
ه(completes 'God') تحقيقfulfillment مستحبa cherished wish
ه تحقيق مستحب
And may God ordain
the fulfillment of a cherished wish.
