A devoted lover yearns for your radiant face.
To your radiant face, a lover yearns,
He sings melodiously of your beautiful qualities.
Enchanted by your beautiful meanings, he sings.

Sometimes he confides in you, at other times he reproaches you.
At times he whispers to you, at others complains,
And still he dreams of the sweetness of nearness to you.
And still dreams of your sweet company.

And this one, like the others, has journeyed to the master,
This poem, like others, is for the professor-
Congratulating him on the new year, while good fortune smiles.
Congratulations on the year, may your smile blossom.

And the master is not far from a faithful heart,
The loyal heart is never far from the professor,
When he settles in Egypt, untying and binding.
Whether settled in Egypt or roaming.

The learned of East and West take pride in him.
And its pyramids and al-Muqattam bow before him.
Pyramids and ruins long for him.

You show the Nile a sea of your own, overflowing with pearls:
You see the Nile as a sea, its pearls covering
Sweet to those who drink from it, but bitter as colocynth to the foe.
Its sweet water for friends, bitter for foes.

And to enemies, fierce might and a lion.
For enemies, you have formidable force and rigor.

But your qualities dictate, so I compose the verse.
But your qualities compel me to compose.
