    The bats are deserts

that may lead the cotton astray, but

what harm is there in the snow covering the ash?

O night that grew gray while still young,

teach the desert to forget the waters.

You erase me and clothe the snow for the cotton,

and you do not forget the ash.

    Before your days, I awake

and sing to you through the ages.

And eyes fashioned by light, from which tenderness flows,

touched my face and sank out of sight

    a day before you came.

And I believe you have now arrived.

    O night that strayed alone,

knocked on the snow, and sheltered

the desert's misstep for an age,

    your hand, the mirror, confided

a secret to the stars of cotton and lodged

my muteness in a bat's silence; so I cast

my weariness behind the snow's death throes, for fear

    of the beginnings of ash!
