Sol 6.1

  1. لعينيكِ الهوى وحدي دعاني

    فما يُغويكِ بُعدٌ أو تداني

    For your eyes, love called me alone.

    So neither distance nor nearness entices you.

  2. وما قدر سواكِ يرقّ دوما

    وقد يقسو فيعصف بالأمان

    And no fate but you is ever tender,

    Yet it may grow cruel and ravage safety.

  3. وما قدر سواكِ أراق صمتي

    فأثبت آهتي ومحا كياني

    And no fate but you poured out my silence,

    Then fixed my sigh and erased my being.

  4. يضيق الكون عن آه بصدري

    سوى ألقٍ بعينيك احتواني

    The universe is too narrow for a sigh in my breast,

    Save a radiance in your eyes that held me.

  5. فهل ساورتِ برقا يصطليني

    وومضا يعتريك وما اعتراني؟

    So have you grappled with lightning that sears me,

    And a flash that overtakes you but has not overtaken me?

  6. وكنت عليكِ قد راهنتُ قلبي

    فلم يجنح ولم أخسر رهاني

    And I had wagered my heart on you;

    It did not stray, nor did I lose my wager.

  7. وعاجلتُ السنين فطاوعتني

    وأمهلتُ الدقائق والثواني

    And I hurried the years, and they obeyed me,

    And gave the minutes and seconds respite.

  8. وساومتُ الخلود عليك حتى

    تدلى لي ولم أبرح مكاني

    And I bargained with eternity over you until

    It lowered itself to me, though I had not left my place.

  9. أكفكف صمتك الولهان عطرا

    وأنثره على كل المغاني

    I gather up your lovesick silence as perfume,

    And scatter it over every dwelling.

  10. فتزدحم العطور إليك قبلي

    لتسمو بالفناء إلى التفاني

    So fragrances throng toward you before me,

    To raise annihilation into selfless devotion.

  11. نطقتك آية في كل آن

    وقبلك كان ذا عُقَدٍ لساني

    I uttered you as a verse at every moment,

    And before you, my tongue was tied in knots.

  12. فتاه بك الخيال فكان سرا

    وحارت فيك شاردة المعاني

    So imagination lost itself in you and became a secret,

    And wandering meanings grew bewildered in you.

  13. ليحملني إليك هوى غريب

    توحش لا يقر على جَنان

    So a strange passion may carry me to you,

    Grown wild, it settles in no heart.

  14. ويدفعني إليك صفاء نفسٍ

    وطبع لا يقر على الهوان

    And purity of soul drives me to you,

    And a nature that will not submit to humiliation.

  15. فمن عينيكِ أستوحي شموخي

    وفيكِ أرى بقايا عنفواني

    So from your eyes I draw my pride,

    And in you I see the remnants of my vigor.

  16. وأبني للقلوب جِنان خُلدٍ

    فيطردني فؤادي من جِناني

    And I build gardens of eternity for hearts,

    Then my heart drives me out of my gardens.

  17. وسعيي للخلود بلا توان

    وأدرك أنني لا بدَّ فانِ

    And my striving for immortality never slackens,

    And I know that I am bound to perish.

  18. ليحرق حُلوَ أحلامي لهيبي

    ويخنق أيَّ كابوس دخاني

    Let my blaze burn the sweetness of my dreams,

    And my smoke choke every nightmare.

  19. فما ألفيتِ غيري من مجيب

    ولا ألفيتُ من أحد دعاني

    So you found no one but me to answer,

    Nor did I find anyone who called me.

  20. تآلف فيكِ ضعفي واقتداري

    وكلّ تناقضي عبر الزمان

    In you my weakness and my power found harmony,

    And all my contradictions across time,

  21. وإيماني وكفري وانقلابي

    ومقدرتي على حفظ اتزاني

    And my faith, my unbelief, and my upheaval,

    And my ability to keep my balance,

  22. وسلطاني وطغياني وبأسي

    وحسي بالهزيمة وامتهاني

    And my authority, my tyranny, and my might,

    And my sense of defeat and my humiliation,

  23. وفقداني التجلد وانكساري

    وترويضي الخطوب وعنفواني

    And my loss of fortitude and my brokenness,

    And my taming of calamities and my vigor.

  24. فمن منا المدان وقد فقدنا

    ولمَّا نختلفْ عهد الأمان

    So which of us is guilty, when we have lost—

    Though we have not yet disagreed—the covenant of safety?

  25. فضميني إلى عينيك فجرا

    طوى المنفى وهام بما يعاني

    So hold me close to your eyes as a dawn

    That folded up exile and fell in love with its suffering.
