مَتىwhen يَشتَفيwill find healing مِنكَfrom you الفُؤادُthe heart المُعَذَّبُthe tormented
وَسَهمُand the arrow المَناياof death مِنthan وِصالِكِunion with you أَقرَبُnearer
When will the tormented heart find healing from you?
And death's arrow is nearer than union with you.
فَبُعدٌso separation وَوَجدٌand anguish وَاِشتِياقٌand longing وَرَجفَةٌand trembling
فَلاso not أَنتِyou تُدنينيdraw me near وَلاnor أَناI أَقرَبُcome closer
So there is separation, anguish, longing, and trembling;
So you do not draw me near, nor do I come closer.
كَعُصفورَةٍlike a sparrow فيin كَفِّthe palm of طِفلٍa child يَزُمُّهاhe grips it tight
تَذوقُit tastes حِياضَthe pools of المَوتِdeath وَالطِفلُwhile the child يَلعَبُplays
Like a sparrow in the palm of a child who grips it tight,
It tastes the pools of death while the child plays.
فَلاso neither الطِفلُthe child ذوendowed with عَقلٍsense يَرِقُّfeels compassion لِماfor what بِهاails it
وَلاnor الطَيرُthe bird ذوendowed with ريشٍfeathers يَطيرُit flies فَيَذهَبُand so it goes away
The child has no sense to pity its plight,
Nor does the bird have feathers to fly and get away.
وَليand I have أَلفُa thousand وَجهٍdirection قَدalready عَرَفتُI have known طَريقَهُits path
وَلَكِنand yet بِلاwithout قَلبٍa heart إِلىto أَينَwhere أَذهَبُshall I go
And I have a thousand ways; I already know the path of each,
And yet, without a heart, where shall I go?
