أُسائِلُها عَمَّن عَهِدتُ وَتَخرَسُ
Timeworn dwellings have grieved me and worn me down.
The dwellings of Darras have saddened and wearied me
I question them about those I once knew, but they are mute.
I ask them about those I knew, but they are silent

And I remember them surrounded by wondrous beauties:
And my covenant with them was studded with wonders
Full moons and suns would dwell in their grounds,
The full moons and suns used to shine with their singing

إِلَيهِنَّ يَصبو الراهِبَ المُتَنَطِّسُ
With heavy hips and languid eyes—
The swinging hammocks, the sick eyes
Even the scrupulously devout monk yearns for them.
To them would yearn the monk in his ragged clothes
