    O Layla's grave, had we been present before you, wailing would have risen

    Over you from women, Arab and non-Arab alike.

    يَكُن لَكَ ما عِشنا عَلَينا بِها نِعَم

    And O Layla's grave, be sure to honor her resting place;

    As long as we live, we shall owe you gratitude for your kindness to her.

    And O Layla's grave, Layla is indeed a stranger

    In your land, with no maternal uncle beside her, nor a paternal cousin.

    And O Layla's grave, before her you never held

    Anyone like Layla, endowed with chastity and generosity.

    And O Layla's grave, today her mother is absent,

    And so are her maternal aunt and those who keep their pledges to her.
