    O Layl, weep for me with your own eyes, in pity—

    for one whose lovesick anguish comes from what you know and I know.

    Is it not strange that we should dwell in the same town,

    both of us suffering there, yet never speaking?

    If indeed what I suffer from love is that I am

    infatuated with it, brimming with yearning, enamored,

    فَمِثلُكِ يا لَيلى يَرِقُّ وَيَرحَمُ

    perhaps you will pity a servant enslaved by love;

    for one like you, O Layla, grows tender and shows mercy.

    My inmost self wept for me, O Layla; indeed it

    surely weeps over what the heart endures and knows.
