فُؤاديmy heart بَينَamong أَضلاعيmy ribs غَريبُa stranger
يُناديit calls to مَنthe one whom يُحِبُّit loves فَلاbut does not يُجيبُanswer
My heart is a stranger among my ribs.
My heart within my ribs is a stranger
It calls to the one it loves, but receives no answer.
Calling out to one it loves but gets no answer
أَحاطَhas closed in بِهِaround it البَلاءُaffliction فَكُلَّand every يَومٍday
تُقارِعُهُbatters it الصَبابَةُpassionate longing وَالنَحيبُand sobbing
Affliction has closed in around it, and every day
Surrounded by afflictions, each new day
Passionate longing and sobbing batter it.
It is battered by youth and sorrow's cries
لَقَدindeed جَلَبَhas brought البَلاءَaffliction عَلَيَّupon me قَلبيmy heart
فَقَلبيfor my heart مُذever since عَلِمتُI have known لَهُof it (affliction) جَلوبُa constant bringer
My heart has indeed brought affliction upon me;
Truly my heart brought this torment upon me
For my heart, ever since I have known it, has been a constant bringer of affliction.
So my heart, since knowing it, is evasive
فَإِنso if تَكُنِare القُلوبُhearts كَمِثلِjust like قَلبيmy heart
فَلاthen may not كانَتexist إِذاًthen تِلكَthose القُلوبُhearts
So if hearts are like my heart,
If all hearts resemble mine, as it is
Then may those hearts never exist.
Then those hearts could have never existed
