أَلاLo! إِنَّindeed لَيلىLayla العامِرِيَّةَof the ʿAmir tribe أَصبَحَتshe has become

Lo, Layla al-ʿAmiriyya has come to
Alas! Layla al-Aamiriya has now turned
hold another's fault against me, though far from me.
To blame me from afar for another’s sin.
وَماand not ذاكَthat مِنfrom شَيءٍanything أَكونُI may have اِجتَرَمتُهُI committed it
إِلَيهاagainst her فَتَجزينيso she repays me بِهِfor it حَيثُas far as أَعلَمُI know
Nor does this stem from any wrong I have committed
Yet that was nothing I had done,
against her, for which she would repay me, as far as I know.
To be rewarded thus, as I know well.
وَلَكِنَّbut إِنساناًa person إِذاwhen مَلَّhe tires of صاحِباًa companion
وَحاوَلَand he seeks صَرماًa severing of ties لَمnot يَزَلhe ceases يَتَجَرَّمُhe finds fault
But when a person tires of a companion
But when a man grows tired of a friend
and seeks to sever ties, he never stops finding fault.
And schemes against an ally, his crimes go on.
