Listen, you who come toward me to learn

of my plight and what I now do in the wilderness.

Do you not know that I have grown familiar with the sandgrouse,

and that the wild beasts of the wilderness graze around me?

By your life, I have no recourse except that I

am absorbed in casting pebbles and tracing lines in the earth,

and that the wild beasts of the land keep company with me—

males, females, then a fawn and a suckling.

And besides my dwelling in the wilderness and my solitude

and my love for Layla, sorrows gather.
