Leave me alone: I am lovelorn and ailing.

Do you not see how affliction has already brought the body to ruin?

God help my heart—what has been allotted to it:

The heat of ardent love, pains, and sickness.

God's lands have grown narrow for me, for all their breadth.

O men! Is there, then, any place on earth to roam?

Separation pains me, and longing wounds me.

And the dwelling lies far away, and our union is sundered.

How can I reach Layla, now that she has been screened away?

I knew her once, when no veils stood between us.
