أَتُضرَبُ لَيلى كُلَّما زُرتُ دارَها

أَتُضرَبُ لَيلى كُلَّما زُرتُ دارَها

وَما ذَنبُ شاةٍ طَبَّقَ الأَرضُ ذيبُها

وَما ذَنبُ شاةٍ طَبَّقَ الأَرضُ ذيبُها

Is Layla beaten whenever I visit her home?

Every time I visit Layla's house, is she struck?

And what fault has a ewe whose wolf has covered the earth?

What sin did the lamb commit for the earth to melt her fat?

فَمُكرِمُ لَيلى مُكرِمي وَمُهينُها

فَمُكرِمُ لَيلى مُكرِمي وَمُهينُها

مُهيني وَلَيلى سِرُّ روحي وَطيبُها

مُهيني وَلَيلى سِرُّ روحي وَطيبُها

So whoever honors Layla honors me, and whoever humiliates her

He who honors Layla honors me, and he who humiliates her

Humiliates me—and Layla is my soul's secret and its fragrance.

Humiliates me, and Layla is the secret of my soul and its delight

لَئِن مَنَعوا لَيلى السَلامَ وَضَيَّقوا

لَئِن مَنَعوا لَيلى السَلامَ وَضَيَّقوا

عَلَيها لِأَجلي وَاِستَمَرَّ رَقيبُها

عَلَيها لِأَجلي وَاِستَمَرَّ رَقيبُها

If they deny Layla greetings and impose constraints

If they forbid Layla greetings and tighten against her

Upon her because of me, and her watcher keeps his vigil,

Because of me, and her guard persists

أَتَيتُ وَلَو أَنَّ السُيوفَ تَنوشُني

أَتَيتُ وَلَو أَنَّ السُيوفَ تَنوشُني

وَطُفتُ بُيوتَ الحَيِّ حَيثُ أُصيبُها

وَطُفتُ بُيوتَ الحَيِّ حَيثُ أُصيبُها

I would come, even if swords reached for me,

I came even if swords would stab me

And roam the clan's homes wherever I might find her.

And I circled the quarters of the neighborhood where she was hurt

فَلَيتَ الَّذي أَنوي لِلَيلى يُصيبُني

فَلَيتَ الَّذي أَنوي لِلَيلى يُصيبُني

وَلَيتَ الَّذي تَنوي لَنا لا يُصيبُها

وَلَيتَ الَّذي تَنوي لَنا لا يُصيبُها

So may what I intend for Layla befall me,

I wish what I intend for Layla would befall me

And may what she intends for us not befall her.

And I wish what she intends for us would not befall her

فَلا تَعذِلوني في الخِطارِ بِمُهجَتي

فَلا تَعذِلوني في الخِطارِ بِمُهجَتي

هَوى كُلُّ نَفسٍ أَينَ حَلَّ حَبيبُها

هَوى كُلُّ نَفسٍ أَينَ حَلَّ حَبيبُها

So do not reproach me for risking my lifeblood:

So do not blame me for the dangers of my passion

Every soul's love lies wherever its beloved dwells.

Every soul yearns where its beloved settles
