أَمِنis it for أَجلِthe sake of غُربانٍravens تَصايَحنَcalled to one another غُدوَةًat dawn
بِبَينونَةِat the parting of الأَحبابِthe loved ones دَمعُكَyour tears سافِحُpouring forth
Is it because ravens called to one another at dawn
For ravens crying at dawn
at the parting of loved ones that your tears pour forth?
With beloveds' separation, your tears overflow
نَعَمyes جادَتِpoured forth generously العَينانِthe two eyes مِنّيof mine بِعَبرَةٍwith a tear
كَماjust as سَلَّdrew out مِنfrom نَظمِthe string of اللَآليthe pearls تَطاوُحُtumbling and scattering
Yes, my eyes poured forth a tear,
Yes, my eyes shed copious tears
as pearls tumble loose from their string.
As prose from loose pearls clash and flow
أَلاah ياO غُرابَraven of البَينِparting لاmay ... not صِحتَyou cawed بَعدَهُafter it
وَأَمكَنَand gained access مِنto أَوداجِthe jugular veins of حَلقِكَyour throat ذابِحُa slaughterer
Ah, raven of parting, may you never caw again,
Oh raven of separation, hush no more
and may a slaughterer reach the veins of your throat.
From your throat's clefts a slayer may come
يُرَوِّعterrifies قُلوبَthe hearts of العاشِقينَthe lovers ذَويpossessed of الهَوىpassion
إِذاwhen أَمِنواthey felt safe from التَشحاجَcawing أَنَّكَthat you are صائِحُcrying out
What terrifies the hearts of lovers, those filled with passion,
Frightening the hearts of lovesick souls
when they feel safe from cawing, is that you cry out.
If from lamenting you cease and cry
وَعَدِّand pass beyond سَواءَthe midst of الحُبِّlove وَاِترُكهُand leave it خالِياًempty
وَكُنand be رَجُلاًa man وَاِجمَحand run wild كَماjust as هُوَit جامِحُunbridled
And pass beyond the heart of love, and leave it empty;
Leave love impartial, vacant
and be a man, and run wild as it runs wild.
Be a man, determined as one who stampedes
