إِنَّindeed الَّتيshe who زَعَمَتshe claimed فُؤادَكَyour heart مَلهاhad tired of her
خُلِقَتshe was created هَواكَyour love كَماjust as خُلِقتَyou were created هَوىًa love لَهاfor her
Indeed, she who claimed your heart had tired of her
She who has captured your heart
Was made to be your love, just as you were made to be hers.
Was created to be loved by you
فَإِذاthen whenever وَجَدتُI find لَهاconcerning her وَساوِسَwhisperings سَلوَةٍforgetting love
شَفَعَinterceded الضَميرُthe inner self إِلىwith الفُؤادِthe heart فَسَلَّهاthen plucked them out
Whenever I find whispers of forgetting her,
So when I find her gentle whispers
My inner self intercedes with my heart and plucks them out.
My conscience pleads to the heart to ask her
بَيضاءُfair-skinned باكَرَهاcame to her early النَعيمُluxury فَصاغَهاand fashioned her
بِلَباقَةٍwith deftness فَأَدَقَّهاthen made her delicate وَأَجَلَّهاand made her majestic
She is fair-skinned; luxury came early to her and fashioned her
The bliss molded her pale whiteness
With deftness, making her delicate and majestic.
With subtlety, perfection and glory
إِنّيindeed I لَأَكتُمُI surely conceal فيwithin الحَشاthe breast مِنfrom حُبِّهاlove for her
وَجداًardent longing لَوَif اَصبَحَcame to be فَوقَهاabove her لَأَظَلَّهاwould surely shade her
Indeed, I hide within my breast, for love of her,
Truly, I conceal in my chest from love of her
A passion that, were it above her, would cast its shade over her.
A passion that if it surfaced would shade her
وَيَبيتُand spends the night تَحتَbeneath جَوانِحيmy ribs حُبٌّlove لَهاfor her
لَوif كانَwere تَحتَbeneath فِراشِهاher bed لَأَقَلَّهاwould surely lift her
And love for her lies all night beneath my ribs;
And love for her sleeps beneath my bosom
Were it beneath her bed, it would lift her up.
If it were beneath her bed it would disturb her
ضَنَّتshe was stingy بِنائِلِهاwith her favors فَقُلتُso I said لِصاحِبيto my companion
ماhow كانَwas أَكثَرَهاso plentiful she was لَناfor us وَأَقَلَّهاand so scarce she was
She withheld her favors, so I said to my companion:
She was stingy with her glances, so I said to my friend
How much she was ours—and how little!
We did not get much from her, and little of her
